glisseq doesn't seem to give me a lot of gains over posifhopit, so I've ruled out a better EQ for now.

Enable Dyn 0 mode in GlissEQ to get a lot of gain.

As cptgone suggested, you'll need to adjust threshold line to fit your song.

I find soniformer is not doing much for the songs, and I can confirm this looking at the spectrum using Inspector on the master bus.

Hmmm...I assume you mention this because you're not hearing much of a difference?

Turn the monitoring mode to "Gains", turn the ratio up to 4:1, and lower the threshold as was already mentioned. You should see the gains increase for each of the 32 bands (assuming attack/release are default) as you lower the threshold. Try a couple of presets they sound different. Assuming you're hitting Soniformer with at least a -24dbfs signal or so you should be able to get a sound out of it. It might be too smooth for you though and you just want a different tool like a more aggressive crunchessor or marquis.

What function are you trying to perform? You have to answer that before you choose a tool - other wise you're experimenting. But experiments are good too - they just take a little longer!

I've got Soniformer on my must by list, with Elephant. I've tried the demos and those two together really worked wonders for my stuff, haven't heard anything quite that dramatic in a while.

Soniformer seems to work its magic most explicitly om acoustic instruments (or emulations) and voice
I've never heard much of a change on electronic pads
(but I've never really pushed it either)
but the changes can be very nice -- warm and lively for acoustic work -- at least in my limited experience

I think it's mainly meant to be used on whole mixes, as a unique mastering compressor.

Of course it works magic on single tracks as well, and especially on guitars etc, but I rarely use compressors on pad sounds.

I bought Soniformer when it was much simpler to use. It's become a fairly sophisticated thing, which is both a blessing and a curse. The presets have very high thresholds, and generally I find they do nothing (nada, nix) on my audio material. You definately have to lower the threshold to get anything happening - and this is quite difficult to do.

It would be nice if Soniformer had a Threshold knob - or a simple way to select all the nodes so you can quickly pull the curve up and down. Maybe there is a function there - i'm not a great manual reader, I just like to load and tweak and if it isn't totally intuitive i'm less inclined to use it.

Many people comment about the complicated GUI's of Voxengo products. There is not a lot of consistency, some knobs that are really confusing (like the Slope knob - ? - why not give Threshold a knob instead?).

But if you can get past the complicated GUI, Soniformer is a fantastic compressor. It's starting to make more sense to me.
