What sets various sequencers apart?

Keyman: This can be achieved with ProTools if your lucky anough to be able to afford a dual monitor card, i.e. one screen for plugs and one for wither the mix or edit window. But I do really like the idea of having a dual seqencer. Tools will only let you run one session at a time (and one sequencer at a time), and I guess it would be really nice to have a type of sketchbook in which to toy with effects and ideas without cluttering up your main sequence page.

Rockstar: I had heard of traction but actually thought it was a softsynth of some description. At the end of the day I guess they all do one and the same job. I think Tools is still the one for me, but the unfortunate part is they kinda sucker you in and once you commit to digidesign they kinda own your soul. But the choice was made for me in the sense that it's what was bein thought in college and it's what we use in work. Just wanted to satisfy my curiosity about other sequencers since there is so many of them out there.

Devon, cheers for clearing up the GigaStudio thing for me, but isn't there 2 separate programmes, 1 called GigaSampler and 1 called GigaStudio?!? Could be getting my wires crossed here!

No, no wires crossed, there was both Gigasampler and Gigastudio. Gigasampler was the first generation by Nemesys Music. Then it became Gigastudio for version 2.0 and 3.0. They're still the same thing though, their both sampler/sample playback, not a host.

Dabbled with Cubase SX for a bit and just always found the interface (especially the mix window) too cluttered or something. Yeah, unfortunately sequencers are too expensive to go hopping from one to another but also it can take a lot of time and effort (AND PATIENCE), to navigate your way around them properly. You could spend a week or two (and alot of money) using it and then decide it's not for you.

The mix window is quite intuitive for me. I've used a large mixing console for many years. Makes perfect sense to me. You've got different mixer views, as well as you can hide multiple parts of the mixer at will too. And learning anything complex as a fully featured host takes time. Once you get a template set and a feel for the program, writing becomes second nature.

I find both Pro Tools and Cubase/Nuendo have such similar workflows (to the point where you can choose the same shortcut keys) that there's little difference in them except price. I use mostly SX because i've always liked it's MIDI and i like using VST's (without having to worry about (or pay for) a fuckin' wrapper). But i still use Pro Tools because thats what most sessions are given to me as

I use ORION Platinum because its an actual virtual studio, not some hacked up piece of software that kind of does the same things. i.e. it has a very studio-like workflow. It is mixer-centric and the mixer is like a hardware one, with sends, inserts, busses and EQ that I could never afford when I used to have to hire a studio to record. The guy who makes it is obssessed with quality so it has effects that anyone else would have to pay hundreds of dollars for and built-in instruments that have no match at any price in either software or hardware [well, one of them anyway]. Its audio recording is very basic but that's not what its about so it may actually make a great companion to ProTools. TBH, if there was no ORION I would almost certainly not be using software for music, it is so different from anything else on the market and is a perfect fit for me. You could certainly do worse than to check out the demo at www.synapse-audio.com

if you don't buy ProTools but something like eXT instead you can easily afford such a graphics-card and still have plenty left...


but that's probaby not what you want to hear...

Hoffy: Think your right about the similar workflow. Think once you know your way around one decent sequncer you can negotiate most of them. Think I just tend to lose patience though when something isn't where it's 'supposed to be,' in a sequencer relative to Protools that is. Used Cubase SX a bit for it's VST's but just ended up forking out for a VST to RTAS wrapper. I like the automation with Tools too much, especially when there's a ProControl close at hand.

Bones: I'm a little confused mate. If Orion is a virtual studio but it's Audio recording is fairly basic what is it good for then? Sounds a bit like Reason to me in the sense that it too is a virtual studio with lots of effects and virtual instruments, except that it has some audio recording capabilities, unlike Reason. Will prob give the demo a lash though. Cheers.
