So, does anyone besides me see the possibility of Adobe buying up a company like Cakewalk so that they can have a complete audio package to compete with Apple? I've been using Audition since it was Cool Edit, and I have to say, the improvements Adobe has mad have been pretty great. It'd be interesting to see what they'd do with MIDI.

Not sure if Adobe would want to go there, it seems a stretch to get from Audition (which makes sense for a multimedia company) to a full-blown MIDI-driven sequencer. But it's possible.

Right now it looks like Cakewalk and Roland are in bed together, but I'm not sure where that's going - collaboration, or consummation like Yamaha-Steinberg?

HI

Personaly I only ever bought it as an editor for audio, cutting samples up and even mastering etc.

I know people use it for audio - but why do people always want to see an application stretched way beyond it's original purpose?

There are so many good sequencers out there - why make Audition get more cumbersome and complex by throwing all the other features required to be a full blown host ?

No.

Adobe's market is largely graphics (digital arts, motion graphics and prepress mostly). It makes sense for them to offer a more complete audio solution for people running Premiere, After Effects and other multimedia stuff who need to add audio to their projects, but branching out to musicians is not their core market, or one they particularly understand that well, and the revenue returns aren't terribly good.

Who knows - if they want to be stronger in that area then maybe they will do something (either develop their own apps or buy an exisiting company for their assets and know how.)

I can't see it happening anytime soon, but I'm happy to be proved wrong. Same with Sony - offering products for people that want to edit/add audio to multimedia projects, but not really offering instruments and musician's tools, it's more cut/paste kinda stuff, even Acid is more widely used for movie people to quickly construct a few looping beds on their projects.

But then a handful of years ago, would we have said similar things about Apple..?

Nope, Logic is an ugly flower that smells better than the rest. Ask the bizzy bees, the ones that know will tell ya...

Well said beej ;)

Multimedia is the hot market at the moment, so it makes some sense for Adobe to have a competing product (Audition) with Sony's (Soundforge), etc.

That said, recent googlings also indicate that the number of users of Digital Audio Workstations is growing at an exponetially phenominal rate -- so one can never tell what the High Muckymucks in Japan and Adobeville have up their ars... er.. sleeves... ;)

lemme guess - advanced mind reading techniques?

Maybe Adobe will buy a MIDI oriented sequencer, but then it won't be Cakewalk. As far as audio companies go, Cakewalk and Steinberg are well at the top (in terms of size of company), which doesn't mean that they can't be bought by a monster like Adobe, vbut I think that if Adobe wants to buy a host, they'll go for a smaller company. Maybe eXT, FL, or Samplitude?? Or even Propellerheads??

Just a hypothesis :)

It won't be Samplitude, nor Propellerheads :).

I'd love to see them incorporate their knowledge of graphics and apply that as tools in Audition, like using image processing algorithms on wave files imported as raw data, etc. Imagine having something like the 'Liquify' tool available in Audition..

Or something like an audio equivelent of Layer effects like "difference" etc - that would be cool.

I don't think Adobe see Apple as much of a competitor. They bought Cool Edit because it was quite strong in the video/broadcast/post-production market and so was known to their customers already and, as beej said, it was a good fit for their other products. The other thing is that they are a cross-platform vendor, they only stopped making a Mac version of Premiere because of the runaway success of FCP and their slowness in getting Premiere up to scratch as a pro off-line editing application.
