hello

hoping some of you want to try out Sp3ctr3

Edit: alternative download here

Edit: update v0.2 - CPU hit halved, pan control fixed, PDC might also work now (edit: no it doesn't)...more to do but thanks to all who tested and commented!

it's an FFT-based audio-mangling plug-in, in an early, basic stage but stable here on cubase 5.1 and win XP.

i wrote it for myself, it's useless for hifi production, it can turn perfectly good songs into slabs of glacial noise and do some other things that i needed but are likely no use to man or beast otherwise. and it will eat yr CPU like hell (edit: actually it's kinda OK now)

main features:

- mangles audio and eats yr CPU (but much less now)
- turn up the hold and the gain for more fun

mp3 demo clip here was once borderline by madonna

get it here or here.

more info on controls:
blur is spectral blur - basically, degradation and noise
hold keeps spectral peaks - like reverb on acid but not
harmonic keeps only/removes integer harmonics of the detected fundamental
threshold cuts FFT partials below this amplitude threshold
edges cuts slow-changing partials (long pure notes) or fast-changing partials (hard attack)
warp warps the frequency spectrum
high cut, low cut, and band stop are hard cuts - nothing gets thru above/below the cutoff freq
delay is just std issue delay - you needed another one didn't you? :)

thanks for looking

i'm calling this an alpha release, but it's more of a survey to see whether anybody wants/needs these kinds of effects enough for me to optimise the code, fix the GUI, and work on it more.

if not, well it's here now anyhow.

thanks for looking

that ui is so retro and hip. i'm definitely trying this one :) CPU eating though eh? :?

if it sounds good i dont care. lets have it!

Post

ouch, you weren't kidding about the cpu usage. I'd probably keep it around if it can be optimized to run light.

Post

Oooooooooooooh... swirly!

I must try this out!

st3pan0va also made Kn0ck0ut VST :D
Thanks for this!

Post

thanks for the superfast responses... FWIW i reckon i can half the cpu hit with a bit of work (lots of duplicated code right now)... still won't make it what you'd call 'light' though ;)

Post

Yummy...please, keep up the good work...

Post

Wow, that is indeed weird.
I like the harmonics knob :)

Post

Cool stuff. Lower CPU would definitely be nice though. :)

fantastic spectral carnage, st3pan0va! Love the "Tempest" graphics! 8)

Post

man that GUI is Buck Rogers, D/A converters are getting all teary eyed

Thanks for the cool stuff

Post

this is sweet

and easy to use

i like that

He he, I just had a listen to the 'Bordeline' demo , expecting to hear at least some remnants of the original and instead I was introduced to the sound of the universe !
Brilliant.
Love the GUI, love the sound.

Cool plugin st3pan0va! 8)

One slight problem is it doesn't appear to report it's delay to host which means PDC doesn't work with this plugin. Not a major issue because it's too CPU hungry to be used as a realtime effect anyway but I thought I'd mention it. I tried it both in Energy XT and Tracktion 2.
the way is not a religious or political statement
