when recording guitar, is it better to add delay effects prior to recording, or after.

here's my issue: i'll be recording in a room with unique reverberation features. the track will include delay at some point. now, if i add delay before recording, the delayed notes will bounce around the room, and interact with eachother (canceling and adding), before being recorded.

if i add delay after, the original recording and the original reverb will simply be altered. the easiest thing to do would be to try both. however, i don't have a delay pedal. i just have a delay plugin. i guess i'm wondering if it's worth buying a delay pedal. thanks.

I would say after anyhow, but when in doubt record it dry...you can add later, but you can't take it away...even with the unique room...hell you can always make an impulse to achieve simliar reverb as the room if yah like..;)
The highest form of knowledge is empathy, for it requires us to suspend our egos and live in another's world. It requires profound, purpose‐larger‐than‐the‐self kind of understanding.

I'd say if you like the sound in the room with the delay, then record it like that. You'll never be able to get the exact same sound in software ...
You could always record the dry signal too, in case you change your mind ...

A delay pedal would be a nice new toy ... i just bought a second hand one for £10 :D

record 2 tracks
room and a dry(DI)
then delay only the dry one and keep the unique reverb intact

"you can always make an impulse to achieve simliar reverb as the room"- Hink

thanks for the advice, Hink. what did you mean by this? does an "impulse" refer to a set of parameters on a reverb modulation program, or to something else?
