I would suggest that what you've read at Gearslutz is utter crap, then. Buss compressors are very suitable for channel compression. If some of them use a little more CPU, then that imparts some limitation on the number you can use running live without needing to render. But that is the only restriction. But I don't really understand why those buss compressors are not really suitable for single tracks, as I have also read on gearslutz
A competent buss compressor can and will act as a competent channel compressor. Some compressors may have a limit to the speed of the attack...but that would only affect their efficacy on things like drum compression and very sharp transients. And if that is a problem, then it's not even suitable as a buss compressor, is it? Because one of the most common busses you need to compress is the drum buss.
The only reason anyone on Gearslutz might not like so-called "buss compressors" on channels is because they have some idiosyncratic dislike of clicking their render button. Render is the solution for any CPU problem.

You may want to take a look at the PSP mix pack. It is dirt cheap and to my ears it sounds dam good. There is also the master comp by them as another person pointed out.
