As a boy I had some difficulty learning my own shoelaces. This condescending and rather useless song wouldn't have helped me back then, but it was very helpful now in allowing me to come to terms with my prior inability.

And yes, in both Media Monkey and Windows Media Player (v11) it shows up as exactly 2 minutes in length.

Instruments: Beta Monkey drum loops, Many Guitar and UBK (guitars and bass), Wusik Station (synth), Peti (accordian), and me and my son on vocals.

EDIT: Since some have found the instructions in this tune to be confusing, I thought I'd include here a little statement as to what this song is trying to accomplish, namely: that's the whole point of my tune, of course: it's a statement on our culture's obsession with teaching everything didactically, as a set of instructions, instead of teaching by showing or doing (which is how all of us learned to tie our shoes). It attempts to show the frustration on the part of the instructor when the pupil can't follow the confusing instructions (though they are technically accurate) and the defiant resignation of the student (my son, at the end) in both asserting and conceding that he'll never tie his shoes, provided with that method of instruction.

My kids made some rainsticks this year at Vacation Bible School a couple of weeks ago that actually sounded pretty cool.

So, I thought, why not record them?

While they were having fun with that, I asked if there was anything else they wanted to record.

So, they pulled out their 'Bee Bop Band' that's just like this one:

and their toy native american drum (basically a cardboard cylinder with rubber stretched over the open ends) and appropriate native american scenery painted on the sides of the cylinder.

and we started recording their rainsticks and toys.

What you will hear is them getting a first hand experience at recording into microphones, then eventually putting sounds into the sampler in Tracktion, making some kid beats, then messing up the beats with dblue's Glitch.

I just took various snippets from our 'session', where they said interesting or funny stuff and where I was giving them some instruction, and clipped it all together. I didn't pay particular attention to levels because it was kind of an organic process. So there's some high-pitched humming here and there, and the kick drum (the toy indian drum) has some pretty bad modulation in it because of closely spaced modes on the rubber drum heads, but it was really satisfying for them to get an idea what Dad does with music on the computer. I couldn't get all the automation to behave on Glitch (don't know if it was due to glitch being beta release or not) but I'm not going to be able to record/mix for the rest of the month, so here it is.

Tracktion's sampler and 4 band EQ and Final Mix and delay
dblue's Glitch
George Yohng's W1 limiter

Emma, Ben and Lydia contributed to this recording besides their dad. Emma played the 'beats' at the last half or so of the song.

Because it took me a while to learn how to use the wonderful Ohmforce VSTi I offer this track as an example of what can be done with Symptohm Mehloman's keyswitch-based patch morphing function. The bass lead is the stock evil bass patch and the crazy morphing crying sound is a Sympohm patch (whose name I cannot recall since this VSTi does not display the patch name after saving). These symptohm patches are modified using the Mehloman morpher by means of keyswitches, i.e. midi notes. The morphing speed can programmed on a time axis in ms. This creates moving and what find at least to be thrilling sounds.

The two other instruments are FXpansion BFD and Camel Audio Cameleon 5000.

SympMotion

I wanted to show how the morphing works with a set of screenshots but I can't remember how to do that. So. I have decided that I will make the FLS project or the midi file available to anyone who wants it.

Traveling in the pacific area for the entire month of august, all I can do is this crappish laptop-only thing, I don't have speakers just headphone. Anyway no bass, no guitar.

I tried to :
A) express the sad feeling of going back to school
B) mix the iwato scale with common western stuff
C) learn the lesson of the previous months : Hybrid, odd time sig, (every month an ugly baby...

)

I had a hard time to settle for sth. this month.
First try, was called 'how to mount a heatsink' and was just crap,
second try was called 'wholetone world' only using the wholetone scale, boy it was ugly

So, I finally settled for this simple pop-rock tune. It has all the annoying qualities you love so much in my entries: pretentious, cheesy, out-of-tune vocals, lame uninspired lyrics loaded with germanisms and grammatical errors, no synths, a bad mix and especially for Barnadine I even included some guitar wankery
