What I Don't Like About Free Plug-ins

No. Don't get it wrong. To use donationwares for free is legal. A lot of people can't afford to give donations in money. Although there are some donationwares, when you need to donate firstly to get the product or expressed in the license you can't use the product without giving donation. They're not free. But fortunatly most of the makers of the donationwares just ask you kindly to donate for the product if you want or afford to do it.

That's so subjective. You decide whether you want buy a copy of xxx or not (as a way to thank the developer). That doesn't change your right to use the freeware.

Don't use warez, but you may use donationwares! Then you are 100% legal.

A couple of times I wanted to evaluate a product properly. The only way to that was to download a cracked warez version. I've done that a couple of times but now I own those products. I'm not worried or feel guilty. But I do believe in the right to know a software program before you pay for it and find out that it doesn't really do what it was supposed to do.

I never buy programs that use dongles or iLoks. Companies must be really worried about their software if they force people to use dongles or hardware-dependent locking mechanisms. I seriously will NEVER buy those programs. No license transfer policies? I feel loathe to hand over my money to software houses who do not want me to be able to transfer a license legally to another user. Many companies allow this, some do not. If the program is really great I may part with my money, even if I cannot transfer the license. A good example of this is Colossus. Great VST collection of instruments, I wouldn't worry about the fact that I couldn't transfer the license.

But if Colossus had required me to use a dongle or an iLok, then I would not have bought it. Simple as that. I will never ever tolerate using software from a company who thinks it's users are all criminals and therefore guilty until proven innocent. I won't tolerate that sort of shit. I have downloaded many of those programs and evaluated them. I found the vast majority of them to be of mediocre quality at best. Of course, I delete all software within a few days of evaluation. If it's really great, I put money aside and allocate funds for a legal license. I delete everything I evaluate, but I have a memory like an elephant so I know what I plan to buy.

Everything from AAS (modelling collection) I will buy those when Tassman upgrade is released. I will buy that upcoming synth from Arwa (Arne) where he uses resynthesis. I will buy the WaveArts power suite bundle. I will also buy JamStix, Microtonic, FL Studio, and that upcoming Piano plugin that's been talked about a lot recently. Why? Because they are good products and I know I'll get the best use out of them.

Don't worry about freeware, imho it's a real chance for the poorer part of the world to jump into the game. If you want to contribute, just say thank you to the developers and tell them your opinion and ideas if you want.

Maybe you want to pay for your instruments and effects because of a different reason: Working for something, buying and finally owning it is a very different thing compared to the current internet copy and rape mentality. Remember how much time you spent with your first instrument, this makes the difference, at least for me ... anyway, there's some hope: If you could afford your hardware, one day you'll also find a way to pay the price for waves .

My thing is that if it will help you generate income, you should give back. I won't buy Waves or WaveArts, but will buy Kjaerhus and Voxengo, if for no other reason than the fact that they give away tons of free stuff that is quality. Are their commercial plug-ins "better" plug-ins than Waves or Wave Arts? I dunno...they sound good to me though and since they are willing to give away free, I'd rather suport those companies as opposed to companies that charge waaaaay too much and make you spend too much on a bundle of crap that you'll never use.

THe thing I hate about Waves is the price per plug is only slightly higher than the Voxengo stuff (before the 20% discounts start kicking in) and the quality isn't any better...the gui's maybe, but not in sound.
