Hello, i tried iZotope Trash and Spectron and i get so much more useful sounds together with let's say pro53. That i'm not looking any further for synths since they don't satisfy my sound needs. Instead i will go for effect plugins like those of iZotope.

Are there any better plugins than iZotopes, were i can sculpt sounds together with synths.

Maybe a good bit reducer for example! I'm a huge fan of microwave so any plugin what can lead to that sound direction is very welcome.

they have a wicked bit reducer. a nice phaser as well. free!!!

It depends what kinds of effects you are after, but lots of people like to put CamelSpace on their synth parts to spice them up. You can find a bit reducer in its companion effect, CamelPhat. You might also want to check out our free compressor/distortion multi effect, CamelCrusher.

One word--"convolution".

I like guitar amp sims:

Voxengo Boogex
Fretted Synth Freeamp2

and distortion:

Christian Budde's Christortion
Noizware Tridirt

and FFT:

Darrel Tam's DtBlkFx

and granulizers:

GVST GGrain

and eqs, filters, pitchshifters, frequency dividers.... any "basic" fx can be combined into chains, their output sent to other chains which divide into more chains until the original sound only acts as a trigger to launch it. energyXT is a wonderful environment to experiment with processing.

What frequency divider do you use? Only one I have is the free one from ConcreteFX, which I like, but it would be nice to have another one that was maybe a bit tamer.

As for sound design effects, any effect can be used as such, it's just a matter of what kind of sounds you are after. For spectral processing, I find Bidule's FFT/iFFT conversion sounds better than either Spectron or Spectrumworx (or the available opcodes in CSound for that matter). Before I bought a Bidule license I did fairly extensive comparisons between all the options of massive spectral processors, I just liked the quality and flexibility of Bidule better in the end (although keeping Cecilia on-hand is definitely worthwhile).

Also, have a look at Soundhack's Spectral Shapers, they are a lot of fun, their morph-like modulation can make for really great special effects.

If you're on a PC, Darrell Tam's dtBlkFX is a must (and it is freeware). Not always the smoothest sound, but the filtering is so damned flexible.

And make friends with some good sample playback devices. Lots of creative and surprising things can be had by mixing down your sounds than re-arranging/processing them in a sampler.

shamann I can't say that I'm fully satisfied with (or competent using) either, but I've used Tiny Splitter http://www.kvraudio.com/get/1641.html and Freqsplitter from silicon/silicium. http://perso.orange.fr/silicon_silicium/index.html

I'll try the Cofx one, thanks. Maybe it is difficult to make a splitter that doesn't introduce artifacts or something, as my experiences are a bit too lofi for other things than noise. (which is just fine usually :-D )

Oh sorry, I thought you meant like an octave subdivider (like the guitar distortion pedals) rather than a frequency splitter. The CoFX one is like that (only VST I know of that sort). I love TinySplitter for 3-band splitting.

great advice shamann. that's so funny you mention these three plugins in the same reply...i've just spent a massive amount of time with bidule's fft processes, cecilia and dtblkfx for a spectral composition for my masters thesis. in fact, every element within the composition went through either bidule's fft's, cecilia, dtblkfx or spektral delay, or a combination of the four. really good stuff.

i completely agree with the magic of sampling as a creative tool. or, just plain old fashioned time-stretching. or, not so plain time-stretching--

paul's extreme timestretch renders simply inspirational results, no matter what you throw at it. great for drone-minimalism type stuff. 8)

Thanks guys for all recommendations! I love cofx i will look for that freq splitter sounds good and daryl thing.

Yeah agree with samplers, i have loads of single cycle wavs. But tend to be lazy with loading a sample timestreching and so on. But i'm so bored with all the synths, and samples taken from anyware are better to play with, and good results are actually instant!

Cool, new kind of fx for me :-D what is the exact name of the plugin you use? I found the free list from his forum, and downloaded some interesting stuff.

So I might just find it out by myself in fact :hihi:

Im really into spatialisation effects at the moment. The whole HRTF business and that. You can get these great 3D panned sweeps and that which work brilliant with background ambiences. I use that kind of stuff quite a bit.

Also, noise reduction plugins can be GREAT sound design tools. You can take an FFT of one sound to build a filter, then apply it to other sounds with interesting results. I also love doing this with distorted sounds, as you can remove all the harshness from a distortion. Again, a great technique for ambient sounds.
