I'm after a commonly used effect, where the start of a song sounds like a concert, or where people are talking (it sounds like an amateur recording), then suddenly the music kicks in. The sounds at the start are sort of 'unmastered' or something - they sound like a bad demo.... The music however sounds awesome when compared to the talking at the start.

One song I know uses it is Korn - Clown. there are many others, but I can't think of them at the moment... Anyone know what's involved in achieving this effect?

Eq, and maybe some added white noise and crackles?

well simply start the recording before you go into the rehearsing room of the band then open the metal door which sounds beautifully (rarely found gimmick) and then jump into the room the band now played the intro already and the singer can start to twist his nuts

I think the "effect" is simply a mic in the recording studio with all the recorded band members as opposed to the rest of the mixed-down track.

You could make a separate recording poorly with one microphone for you could just filter the into.
Not hard to do...
