Hey all.
Im trying to learn 3D (C4D) and so faar I have ...
eh
nothing to show.
Well. I managed to form a decent knob in C4D but I cant figure out how to skin it.
What would help is a simple knob made in a compatible 3D app just to see how lightning/shading works.
And a quick Tutorial on how to render them ....
OI would prefer the result to be frames as bmp+alpha.
Is that possible? Or do I have to render the shadow as a seperate render maybe?
Who am I kidding..?
I dont have a clue how to render anything in the first place. =)
Its so hard to find good tutorials.
Most of them describes how to make a static boring Vase or a complex scene bigger then life itself.
Im thinking.
It should be simple to create just one knob, add some lights + render to movie or frames.
I mean. Its just one object.
buhuuu....
Why isnt it?
C4D is probably the wrong choice so Im going to try Lightwave since Grymmjack seems to do good with it.
T u t o r i a l s needed =)

This may have been brought up already, but your shadows don't follow the light-from-top-left convention, meaning the GUIs will look like they exist on another plane of existence to the rest of the computer's interface.
This could be a desireable thing tho!

yes i agree, 3D is very difficult and deep to get into. i've been using blender (a free one) and it's very very good but VERY deep. need to RTFM x 10 seriously, and go through all of the various tutorials. i'd say give blender a try, there is a huge community around it and since it's free you dont have to worry about any out of pocket expense. www.blender.org if interested. i've been trying to cheat importing EPS into blender as a 'curve' and then extruding/adjusting adding lights, etc, does C4D do such a thing? how much does it cost? C4D is an acronym meaning?

Great tip about Blender.
Thanx grymmjack.
C4D is Cinema 4D
http://www.maxon.net/pages/products/c4d/cinema4d_e.html#
It is a huge 3D app.
I also got Lighwave and it seems to be good to. But it is so freakiiiing hard.
So I will definetly try Blender. Big community is very important.
About that trick of yours.... importing .eps to use as curves....
Gibberish to me.
=)
I think C4D can do just about anything so it is possible.
Thanx grymmjack.

CINEMA4D is powerful and relatively easy to learn,
Lightwave is more difficult to grasp at first, but has a better renderer,
Blender 3D is powerful and free but difficult to learn,
and 3D apps like XSI, MAX, Maya and Houdini are overkill for simple synth GUI creation.
One alternative way is to use one of the many free modelers to model the geometry,
(Wings 3D is good and easy - www.wings3d.com) and then pass the geometry to a renderer.
You can use many free or low cost renderers, and a very good and easy one is Bryce,
which is given free by some sites and magazines these days (i paid for it in the past...)
But it is not necessary to use 3D software. Drawing software like Photoshop, Xara, etc
can produce circles, squares, rounded rectangles, etc with bevelled corners, highlights,
shadows, and other "fake" 3D effects that can be used in synth/effect GUI designs.
I'm always interested in creating graphics for vsti plugins,
and if someone needs knobs, sliders, buttons, panels etc.
i'd be happy to design and render such graphics for free.
It's a way of saying "thanks" for all the free software i use in my music ...
So, if somebody wants, just email me.

And since this thread is back up I would too like to announce that I'm up for new Gui designs. Both, free and commercial. No new examples on the site yet since I have worked with various major projects that wont probably get released until early next year. If intersted contact me at tsv@tsvdesign.net. Thanks

i have wondered why top-left has been the standard.SKoT_FX wrote:This may have been brought up already, but your shadows don't follow the light-from-top-left convention, meaning the GUIs will look like they exist on another plane of existence to the rest of the computer's interface.

i've noticed a few VSTers at deviantart. someome with time should start a group.

I actually hadn't paid any attention to this until somebody brought it up. I guess if you are right-handed the right to left lighting feels more natural than left to right. I also decided to start using right to left. I guess you could also use direct from the top lighting but it will cause problems if you want the shadows to be animated (you would have to render each knob separately).CC4 wrote:i have wondered why top-left has been the standard.SKoT_FX wrote:This may have been brought up already, but your shadows don't follow the light-from-top-left convention, meaning the GUIs will look like they exist on another plane of existence to the rest of the computer's interface.

Btw my Gui design schelude at the moment is still rather empty so anyone who is interested feel free to contact me.

for top, I presume it's because we are used to seeing the light from top, and for left it might be because right-handed people used to work with a light on the left of their desktop (remember, a long time ago, when we used pencils to writei have wondered why top-left has been the standard.
It's funny how disturbing it may be to see inverted shadows (but it's no always the case though).
Glad to see you are back!Btw my Gui design schelude at the moment is still rather empty so anyone who is interested feel free to contact me.
That would be a good idea, indeed!i've noticed a few VSTers at deviantart. someome with time should start a group.
