Congratulations for this conviction! This is something I never read in forums. If more people did this the music industry would not be in the mess it is in today.

There are probably plenty of people who have to come this same conclusion, also people who have, while using cracked software themselves, denounced using it at the same time...and only a rare one or three people who have never, ever, ever, ever, ever used a cracked piece of software.

There are more people who use cracked software than people think, there are more people who don't use cracked software than people think, and there are more than a great deal of people who have used cracked software and then swore it off...and there are also morons who've downloaded and loaded on their machines everything they can possible and use not a single bit of it...

I personally have been all of those people at one time or another.

It just doesn't get talked about a lot.

The developers are obviously aiming for "professional people who have the money to pay for a similar product" when they are asking for donations, otherwise they would have some sort of nag-screen if they really expected payment. The "kid in the basement on an old computer using a free soft-synth to explore music" shouldn't feel guilty.

The music industry is in a mess because of...? :?

I f**king hate how freeware is always free. What the hell is up with that, anyway?

Apparently free monetarily but not psychologically.

One year ago I decided it's time to ditch all the warez, format my HD and "become legal".The problem was money, most of which I spent on hardware. So I decided to search for the best free VST effects & instruments to use inside FL Studio. It had to be absolutely free (no donations, no sending patches).I downloaded the VSTs after asking the developers if their plug-in/s are COMPLETELY FREE, or, if I can't contact them, I checked and double-checked on their site.
Some developers said it was absolutely free but...if I really like the plug-in/s I should buy their products. Now don't get me wrong, it a commercial world we live in but now I don't wanna use this plug-in 'cause I'll feel guilty.
You are like the cheapest person I ever saw

This discussion already got out of hands, but I'll add my contribution.

DONATIONWARE: I have donationware. Some people donate money. I happy. You no like donationware. You not use my plugin. You unhappy.

FREEWARE: I have freeware. You use my plugin. You happy. No people donate any money. I unhappy.

CONCLUSION: Better you unhappy.

To AhmedTaburov,

Let me put on my psychotherapist hat and grab the requisite pipe:

It sounds like you have latent guilt for using warez, which you should feel guilty for, no matter what justification you may have tried to use in the past, the inner conflict you created for yourself is still not yet resolved.

Penance is necessary for a time. Perhaps as penance you should write a letter of regret to all developers of which you used warez products and let them know that now you have repented and are using a legitimate copy of their software.

Then following that, make a list of the freeware plugins you use most and whether the developer asks for a donation or not, contact the developer and send them a little money via PayPal, Amazon Tip Jar, or something similar.

This is no guarantee to remove the guilt from your past bad behavior. That is the danger of walking on the dark side of warez use.

Now removing the pipe and shaving off the goatee.

Sollution:
Use freeware plugins but promote the developers by telling people what plugins you use. It's really just that simple.

Some seem to feel the need to wring their hands in public and have a major display of existential angst over what to do. It's not rocket science, people, just follow your conscience* .
