Whooaaa, the SSL G sounds so much like Marquis T1. Aleksey says it wasn't modeled after anything either.

Anyway, gg Marquis, Compadre, and Waves SSL.

thats funny I was the one that didn't like c03 at all, because it has crackles in between the audio file...

I was never a big fan of WAVES tools in anyway...

but we have to be carful here also...
maybe the WAVES does a hrader compression at your settings and these crackles may be part of the dry drumloop.

you also should consider that this test could have had other results with other samples.
Its just one drumloop you send through

AAARGH! I seriously would have given 1975 a try - but Pace iLok - no thanks... to bad for me...

Does Marquis has a sample delay like PSP Vintage warmer? Please tell me it has no sample delay.

The crackles might be from the soundcard drivers running at a latency too fast for the plugin.

don't think so. If he used render, soundcard doesn't affect the sound...

I think the G has more compression than the others and the crackles are in the lower bit resulation part of the sample...

As stated before, with this test nobody can judge anything ....

Best think at the moment is to not compare them in isolated situation, but use them in real worl projects and then after a long time you will get a feeling what suits best for your own productions...
This surely will be subjective...

But thats the way that also did affect the real hardware.

They were no legend right from the start. They became over the years, when producers realized that the results are better on this or that machine/compressor/mixing console....

I listened to the original again. The Crackles are in the decay of the snare, probably a lofi sample. The SSL pumps more (in a way that solidifies the groove, which is the main reason I liked it

), so it brought out the snare's decay.

I don't see why. For me, the URS1975 sounded the best, where i tried to get the same, great result with with my Kjaerhus GCO-1 - and it wasn't not possible to sound as clear as the URS - for THIS specific loop(!). I would have tried the URS1975 on other stuff as well to see if its really good on other material as well... so in a sese this comparison made sense for me as i tried to match the best result to my ears with my favourite plugin.

so the SSL may just be the best one in terms of compression...

But at all I don't like compression in any context. I think I mostly destroys sound....

Okay you need a little on mastering, but not to much to make the sound pump.

If you want the nice pumping in dance traxx, go with something like sidechain compressor/gates etc...

normal compression is for mastering (make it more loud) and real acoustics optimizations, like a vocal recording, or real recorded guitars and drums, I'm sure the SSL is quite nice on these things....

That's kind of funny - according to Aleksey's website, Marquis' T3 mode is patterned after the SSL:

"I'm working on including this a'la SSL mixbus timing schematic (probably it's not even the original SSL, but how knows)"

several dozen variations of it available at prodigy pro forums and google helps also.

In fact it would be pretty dumb to buy them from SSL:

1. the parts cost around 150-200e for one (vs. several grand direct from SSL) and it's a beginner DIY project.
2. one can make it sound better
3. you can add modifications easier.

I'm surpriced. The ones that were probably the most suitable for my use (ONLY according to the sound examples given by someone else than myself) were compressors that I've never tried before...
