Congratulations for this conviction! This is something I never read in forums. If more people did this the music industry would not be in the mess it is in today.
Huh? How is the music industry in a mess today because of Warez? I thought it was a mess because of a profound lack of good ideas and an insatiable lust for money.
I try to care and understand.

DONATIONWARE: I have donationware. Some people donate money. I happy. You no like donationware. You not use my plugin. You unhappy.

FREEWARE: I have freeware. You use my plugin. You happy. No people donate any money. I unhappy.

CONCLUSION: Better you unhappy.

Don't forget that there are benefits to many of the developers who give away freebies. Advertising costs a lot of money, and sometimes is a complete waste of lots of money. Giving away some good freebies should be seen as cheap, effective advertising for these guys. I buy from Kjaerhus & Voxengo, because they are brilliant guys making brilliant products, and even their freebies are brilliant. If it wasn't for the freebies, I may not have known about them or their commercial products. It certainly kept me coming back, and makes their names uppermost in my thoughts about plugins. And satisfied users tell other users, and it's generally win-win for everyone. It's also less likely that these products will be cracked. The commercial guys like Waves & Bombfactory etc just annoy everyone with their apparant greed, and probably deserve to get cracked.

Then there are people like Sasha who did the DigitalFishPhones stuff. Beautiful free products from a beautiful website. He now has a global reputation and is working for a major DAW company doing what he loves best - sounds like a win-win to me.

Others just do it for love - and some of those are the best ever.

One year ago I decided it's time to ditch all the warez, format my HD and "become legal".The problem was money, most of which I spent on hardware. So I decided to search for the best free VST effects & instruments to use inside FL Studio. It had to be absolutely free (no donations, no sending patches).I downloaded the VSTs after asking the developers if their plug-in/s are COMPLETELY FREE, or, if I can't contact them, I checked and double-checked on their site.
Some developers said it was absolutely free but...if I really like the plug-in/s I should buy their products. Now don't get me wrong, it a commercial world we live in but now I don't wanna use this plug-in 'cause I'll feel guilty.
There are very few that are "completely free" in the sense that the distribution rights are in the public domain, and almost as few that are "completely free" in the sense that they are licensed under the GPL.
