Are any free effects better than Cubase's built-in ones?

For me its clear : never use Cubase build-in fx...

I've been using Waves Platinum for years, among other things. I thought many of the effects sounded exciting compared to what Waves offers. I must admit that I've only been using Cubase SX3 for a little over a month, but I've liked what I've heard for some things.

I don't really think that effects are "good" or "bad". Effects should have character. They may not work on source, but they may sound great on another.

Reverbs don't have to be real sounding either. I'm not sure when this became an issue. I don't hear "real" in high end Lexicon gear, either. So what!

Use your own ears, but you should try out all the stuff out there, especially if it's free. Of course, I've been engineering for about 5 years and usually get my tones before the converter for most things. So, I find that I don't use that much EQ anyway. If I'm using an effect, it's for creative use so anything goes, really.

at least I like Cubase for its midi features, there it is far better than Samplitude...

With audiofeatures it is little bit behind the others at the moment....

Next version is coming, we will see.....
But I'm sure that also the poducers of samplitude will work on their midi implementation.

Both Samplitude and Logic cost more than Cubase. SX 3 is $300 less than either of those two on Sweetwater.com, for instance.

Logic is more expensive, but also has more in the box in the way of synths and effects too, so I feel that it's in the same playing field at least. Compared to what Cubase has to what Logic has, the amount of synths and effects would easily cost $300 more if you had the opportunity to buy them separately. Hell, ES-2 was $199 a few years ago, so....

Well they're all definitely in the same playing field, I think it's apples & oranges when it comes to features, but what I'm trying to say is: if Cubase already costs the same as those hosts, then it would be a stronger argument for Steinberg to up their FX. But for now, it's not an issue; you pay more for Logic and you get more kick-ass effects! One wonders if that's why it's more expensive?

Personally, I'd rather get an awesome host for less and sort out the FX later. Now you could say "you'll have to spend $300 to upgrade the effects", but yeah, like we wouldn't do that anyway...
