I've always wondered, since I'd heard it from a few oldschool jungle tracks and I've always loved it...check out what a gridster discovered:

He samples all of that stuff off vinyl so I wouldnt be surprised.

While it's a good discovery, and the loop obviously originates from this track, I've heard a different story of how it ended up on firestarter... and it's a much more boring one.

Jungle Warfare vol 1. (one of the best sample CDs ever) features it in a basic form, with a bass/kick added to it. The sample CD predates firestarter by about 5 years. Apparently mister howlett simply used that, and changed the kick/bass to bigger.

Can't remember what music tech. mag I read this from, as it's a very long time a go, but it seems valid.

Yea youre right the firestarter version was probably from JW.

It sounds like the jungle warfare example was lifted straight from a hardcore track (most of the jungle warfare smaples were...). This example sounds SO much better than the JW one.

Dont forget though, those samples are from way back, regardless of where Zero G nicked them from. JW might be a good library, but its probably the most highly illicit ever made!

Yeah, sounds like that break, but embellished with some sample hits pitched pretty high. And ofcourse that big stonking kick on one.

also the breakbeat bits not from firestarter arent the tempo that firestarter is at.

The jungle warfare one sounds a lot more like the firestarter one.

Liam admitted in an interview at the time that it was in fact from a sample CD, but that he added an all important extra snare in the break that changed it from a straight d'n'b break to something a bit newer ( at the time)

IIRC, the drums on the sample CD were played by Paul Kodish, who then went on to drum for the Prodigy live, as well as Apollo 440 and many others.

Liam said that he took the loop, sliced it up in ReCycle and tweaked it.

Yeah i have Jungle Warfare for Reason, great collection of breaks which still can be used today with some carefull layering.

The break off of Prodigy's Firestarter...
