Hey 'Tick,

I know you're up to your butt in all things Rhino (1.06 - yippie!!) and I thought Rhino started out as Rainbow 3 and took on a life of it's own but I was wondering if you ever intended on expanding Rainbow's concept or do you think it's logical successor is Rhino?

Sometimes I think of Rainbow and the things that would make it cooler and wish for something new, like a different interface and the ability to work with samples ala the SY77/SY99. And if you threw in a bit of good old Angelina formants that would be most excellent.

Any chance of a Rainbow 3?

Bruce,

You're right about that, if you ditched this old web site with the Rainbow 3 concept screenshots, you'd see a lot of similarities with Rhino. However, at that time I received so many negative reactions from Rainbow users (mainly things like: "we don't want no stinkin' multi page synth. Keep it all on the same interface") that this could not be Rainbow 3 - Hence Rhino. Eventually it was a very good thing, because I thus had more freedom to do what I wanted in Rhino.

So now... what about Rainbow ? As time permits I'd like to move Rainbow to the common core vsti engine I use in Angelina, CheezeMachine and Rhino. It would thus benefit, among others, from the voices limiter.

The biggest problem I have for making changes to Rainbow is the user interface. There's no way to fit anything more in it without some drastic changes. If you have suggestions, especially concept drawings, please send them my way. You know I'll be pleased to consider them.

If I do send them Rainbow users would be horrified. :D

Change is good. I like Rainbow's interface but have no concept until I know what features were going into it. One thing for sure, a modulation matrix for routing issues but I don't see how you can add more to Rainbow without adding tabs or popup dialog boxes.

Rainbow 2 users should jump in.....

I don't see any problem having a mod matrix on a separate page or pop up box. Keep the eg's simple. Maybe expand the sequencer and put it on a separate page. I would like to see much more control in the sequencer. I would love to see it expand to maybe a 6 X 16 analog style sequencer with good controller assignments. On a separate page of course. Also, once you set up a pattern you like it should be a simple process to export the sequence to a midi file. With so many programs like Project 5 coming out that allow drag and drop midi loops to build parts this would be a great asset for building a library of arp midi loops, and a good sound source for those loops. Rhino's focus can remain the great eg's and Rainbow could be focused more on simple sounds for use in sequenced loops and arps. Well, not the entire focus of course, but just make it a first call synth for arps and programming patterns.

All I need to be happy is one more VSTi.

Good ideas Robert although it's worth noting that Rainbow is quite capable of good pads already. That said, I'd love to see some way of integrating at least one user sample in Rainbow 3.

It would make for as complex or subtle shadings. I'm not talking CronoX 2 or the way Rhino handles waveforms, I'm just saying that a simple sampler would change the entire way we work in Rainbow.

We'd still be able to work like in Rainbow 2 but we'd have a substantial added dimension (and possibly smaller CPU footprint) which would also make Rhino and Rainbow different and complimentary.
