What's up with Kjaerhus?

I don't buy the theory that this system of not allowing registered users to unlock the latest version deters crackers at all.
A cracker can simply take the latest demo, and run their disassembler and remove the code relating to the time restriction. Or if they aren't that sophisticated and want to simply give away a registration key and the related .dll, how is that going to stop them?
I don't use cracks - and I simply want to pay for my sofware. I am fully aware that because of bug fixes and stuff, any software I purchase is going to go through several revisions. I want the ability to download the latest demo at any time I choose, and unlock it with the key I have already purchased.
If I can't do that, then there is little difference from being stuck with challenge/response or iLock. It's a pain in the arse. It's the whole issue of having to depend on a dot.com vendor, who may or may not cease trading at a moments notice. I'm aquiring software for my next PC purchase. I don't want to buy stuff that may not work, or may not be available when I need it.

Eh? I don't see any difference or benefit compared to getting an email for the latest version. Surely the email is sent within a few days of the latest update, no?

Yeah - i'm a hostile whiner - what of it?
Maybe it's a language thing but I find the statement "Please note: This version can NOT be used as an update for registered users!" to be an insult to registered users, like myself.
Ok - so I was stupid enough to pay for my version. So why should I be disadvantaged like this? Why does the demo version have a "register now" option if it isn't going to work?
I have hundreds of plugins, and upgrading to a new machine is a fcking nightmare. I have hundreds of CD's with thousands of copies of versions of plugins. Ultimately - none are worth a piece of shit if they aren't the very latest version.
All I want is the security of knowing that when I build my next PC, I can download the very latest version of all my plugins and register with the keys I have purchased. I don't want to go groveling to each and every developer for each and every plugin. I don't want to be stuck with older, buggier versions just because I decided to purchase them now, rather than later.
I disappointed that a vendor I thought had a good system is fouling it up. This only strenghtens my resolve to find other vendors who don't make my life too complicated - I don't see how this helps them financially at all.

Man, if you find this insulting then you've got a way bigger problem than being unsatisfied with a software-company...

I own most of the Gold series... with that I've been able to use my key files with all of the versions - this must be something new.

yes I must admit I don't get it, you are a registered user, download the latest update using the link emailed to you ... register with your keyfile, am I missing something ?
Also regarding formatting computers, you should learn to keep your software library organised and it won't be hard at all. I format every few months and since I have everything in one place, no issues whatsoever. A good idea is to keep installers and license files in one place on your hard disk and back it up every few months. Keep the license file in the same folder as the installer and it is very easy. A structure like...
Software / Audio Software / Kjaerhus GAC 1.02
which contains the installer, the license key file and maybe a copy of your invoice as a PDF.
Still kinda confused by this thread, then again, I have a cold right now, must be getting to my head or something
P.S.: Did you try the GAG before buying it ? The demo version is actually quite a great way of figuring out if you like it or not since dynamics processors are very subjective.
Cheers

I really don't understand. I have almost all Kjaerhus' plugins. And with every release of each plugin I get an email with the new download link. What's your problem? Didn't you get the email? Or you lost it? In that case email Torben directly. There are several other developers who separate their demo and registered version and who send an email when there's a new version (NuSofting, KongAudio and Livelab.dk come to mind). And of course there are also companies like Voxengo, PSP, OhmForce/GForce, NI who let you download the software directly, but it's not like Kjaerhus is the only company with this system.Kiwburger wrote:Yeah - i'm a hostile whiner - what of it?

Maybe you should get a beer... then some sleep... then some coffee... and then rethink this thread.

yup, you are missing something - he wants to be able to unlock the demo, because in case e.g. his harddisk crashes and he has to reinstall he doesn't want to go through the hassle of having to mail each developer for their products...soundpalace wrote:yes I must admit I don't get it, you are a registered user, download the latest update using the link emailed to you ... register with your keyfile, am I missing something ?
...which is understandable but can be avoided by burning all the software onto a dvd and keeping it at a safe place.

ahh good point, double check in shareit, when you login, it will probably be there too I think.jens wrote:yup, you are missing something - he wants to be able to unlock the demo, because in case e.g. his harddisk crashes and he has to reinstall he doesn't want to go through the hassle of having to mail each developer for their products...soundpalace wrote:yes I must admit I don't get it, you are a registered user, download the latest update using the link emailed to you ... register with your keyfile, am I missing something ?

Kiwburger, The trial versions of some of the plug-ins can not be used for registered users as the code for saving parameter data with the Host project is missing. There is a warning below the link so registered users don't accidentally use it; I do not see how a warning can be insulting? Crackers can not use the demo version because some code is missing; simple as that.
I don't understand your frustration. Registered users get an e-mail with a download link; you download and install and that's it, you don't have to reregister or anything. How more easy can it be?
Lee702, I think shareit tries to avoid too many credit card misuses. Every time a credit card has been misused we loose money as the amount of money subtracted from our account is larger than the amount we got on the sale, so they might have to take actions, like rejecting free email accounts, even though it is inconvenient for the legit buyers.

Perhaps a solution to these concerns is for developers who use this method to do as PSP and Voxengo and a few others have done and allow customers to register their product key numbers with the company site in a user area and also to allow users to redownload the current version at any future time. This works while they stay in business at least.
I have (paid for) downloaded samples (eg ManyGuitar) that would be lost forever should I have a system crash and no backup or lose all my HDs and backup disks in a house fire. I have plenty of CDs and DVDs which would be lost if there were a robbery or a fire although insurance would likely cover that eventuality in the case of commercial CD/DVD collection.
As far as this thread goes, I really don't think the "angry customer" thing is a wise choice for a first approach.
I generally find that if I want help from a vendor I just have to ask politely. I have never needed to go onto the forums and rant about their all-round bastardry (with the exception of Apple who bought Emagic and decided I wasn't their customer anymore
).
I am not sure why people pursue this latter course. It seems like they perhaps want to blow some steam off somewhere so they pick on someone who who is obliged to show restraint while the rest of the marketplace looks on.
On a few occasions I have been with friends who suddenly turned feral on someone behind the counter in a shop or when picking up an item from service agents. On every occasion it blew up in their faces - while remaining courteous the dealer/repairer let them keep digging that hole and making fools of themselves.

why do you format every few months? are you running windows xp? you don't need to reformat like you used to have to do with 9x or NT.soundpalace wrote:Also regarding formatting computers, you should learn to keep your software library organised and it won't be hard at all.
