Yeah I know it's way old school and it's now run by Adobe now, but I've still got my software from very first computer system that ran Win98.
I already have an editor, but there are some features on Cool Edit I'd like to experiment with.
Is anyone running this software on with WinXP Pro? I'm not too keen on trying it out without knowing for sure that it won't end up doing my system some damage.

It runs fine on XP. I've used it for years with no problems.

Yep, it's still running fine...
I don't actually recall having any major problems when running any Win95 program under XP.

I started out with Cool Edit Pro 1.2 back in 1999 and later made the transition to Sonar. In 2003 I reinstalled Cool Edit on a system using WindowsXP Home and it Performed just fine. Even after all these years, I sometimes go back to Cool Edit with Sonar wave files just to use some of the effects. For example, the chorus effect, to me anyway, is much more effective than some of the more recent software I have. The Time/Pitch functions are graphic displays that allow you to draw just what you want and seem very stable. Of course, this is before the days of realtime and all the effects are applied, so that may contribute to the stability. Since we're on the subject of Cool Edit Pro, I have a question that has been rolling around in the back of my head for sometime, maybe someone can answer. What is the classification of the Plugins in Cool Edit. I mean, they are not VST's, DXI's or the ProTools stuff. What are they? Are the effects something native to the host?

I own Audition 2, and honestly I'm not sure what's changed from the old Cool Edit Pro, apart from having features added. I was using Cool Edit Pro 1.2 .. I think that was the version, the latest before it became Audition? .. on XP for a while, so it works fine.
Resetti: I think the plugins are their own format specs, although they might be VSTs for all I know. Why do I say this? When I bought Audition 2, I was able to choose a "gift" for registering. I chose the tube compressor plugin (a small little freebie). It's a VST, or at least that's where CEP loads it. And yet .. no other VST host will load it, that I know of. So for all I know the plugins could be VSTs that make sure the host is Audition before loading/functioning? But I'll bet they're CEP/Audition's own format.

They are native to the host (i.e. Cool Edit specific). There's (was) even a plugin SDK for their format. But with so many open plugin formats now, Adobe are downplaying the old Cool Edit plugin format.Resetti wrote:Since we're on the subject of Cool Edit Pro, I have a question that has been rolling around in the back of my head for sometime, maybe someone can answer. druid and blurk: Thanks for responding. Thats what I was thinking. Somehow, perhaps it was in semi-dream states, but I have always wanted to use the Cool Edit Pro effects in other hosts and something just didn't add up.

I dunno about CE Pro but CE2k had a free extension that allowed it to work with DX plugins. If you wanna try it I can emiail the .exe to you. PM me with your email address if you want it.

CE Pro (v2 at least) natively supports DX FX plugins. Audition 1.5 introduced support for VST FX. But the the native format of the bundled plugins was their own. I gather though, that Audition V2's bundled FX are now mostly VST format, though they may be locked to Audition.

The last version of CEP was 2.1. But FWIW there was a v1.2a.druid wrote:I own Audition 2, and honestly I'm not sure what's changed from the old Cool Edit Pro, apart from having features added. I loved cooledit ..i started out on it ...Im mad they took that brainwave synch thing in the audition version.
some really cool effects came from that thing.
Even tho i have protools I still use audition for really quick sample chopping .. or a few of the effects that it has
