Sonar Fans should count their blessings, at least they have the option to upgrade or not ……………..unlike some other poor Burgers

A reliable MIDI Arpeggiator that doesn't screw up chord arpeggiation start times or lose sync with /3 timings would be a start... instead of giving the same old MIDI FX new GUIs which, afaik, is all that they did to 'improve' them the last time...

No, but seriously, I hope they fix some of the bugs. They should really do that before making it even more bloated. How many god damned compressors do you need? Fixing, for example, the bug that makes it crash when you audition a MIDI effect would be more valuable than getting yet another compressor or reverb, in my opinion.
Yes I agree, I wish things would be fixed rather than going for the big money upgrades. The envelope automation bug was carried from 4 to 5, and now they have fixed that there are the new bugs like the drifting timing and looping>crash bugs.

Would be a bonus to see more voxengo plugs included and fingers crossed something else from rene but functionality should prevail over shiny features.

Bill OC wrote:I still consider myself a loyal Cakewalk customer, but no more automatic yearly upgrades for me. Another year, another cut-and-paste job on their manual--and the associated cottage industry of books and tutorials.

It isn't only Cakewalk--it's the damn 12-month production cycle. I want to see the "i's" dotted and the "t's" crossed. A year just doesn't seem like enough time for a small company to design, code, oversee beta-testing, manufacture, advertise, and distribute a new version.

I don't want only to read the splashy ads. I want to really know what they've actually got underneath the marketing package.

Cakewalk is my favorite software company. But, for me, even their feet must be put to the fire.
Again I agree with you, its a shame to see a superb product compromised by the corporate/marketing department's lust for $$$'s

The more of these plugins they add, the more frustrated I become with their DX-only policy (as with Sonitus)... I hate it being locked to Sonar and not being able to use them in Live. If the cost of the upgrade relates primarily to the added plugins, I would rather forego the upgrade and buy plugins seperately that I can use as and where I want to use them.

Actually, VST versions of about half of the Sonitus plugins are shipped with Sonar. They dont get put into the VST folder, though.
It would be nice to get the VSTs for the rest though, I agree. Particularly Pentagon.

Try using them via Console, or FL.

I doubt if it does relate primarily to the added plugins.

:o Oh... so where do I locate them in order to copy them over?

(The only VSTs I found were Perfect Space - very nice! - and sfz.)

Yes, nice synth.
Try using them via Console, or FL.
I tried using the synths in Live via the FL demo (most of them appear) but it caused unusual CPU spikes.
The Sonitus effects I have been using via the VB Audio ffx4, which is fine for basic use but of course does not allow for automation.

I doubt that too  . However, if most of the core improvements relate to adding Live-like functionality (gapless audio, racks, instrument tracks, etc) I might find myself owning two very similar programs... both being updated simultaneously. Simply due to cost I might need to choose beteen them sometime soon, which tbh I will find very difficult as they are both great!

Cheers.

Im sure they were left in the same folder as the DX versions... I'd need to check, though.

I think its always going to be the case that the feature sets of these programs tends to converge. That's probably a good thing if you've only invested in one host, less so if you own more than one...

You got me interested now...

I set Tracktion to scan the whole Cakewalk folder in Program Files... the only thing it found - and seems able to use! - is Pentagon I :-o

Will investigate further...

Well the good news is that Pentagon I does have the VST .dll file buried away in there. Go to Program FIles > Cakewalk > Shared DXi and copy over the whole Pentagon I folder to your VST folder and voila! You have Pentagon I VST at your disposal!!

No such luck with the Sonitus stuff though... if you can work out how to get VST versions for those effects, please do let me know!

Thanks.

I'll check it out; Ive definitely done it before. It may have been from the Sonar4 installation though.

Perhaps in that version they left the VST .dll's in *by mistake*. That would explain my lack of success finding them in S5. Having fun playing with Pentagon I in Live though

Regarding predictions/rumours, in terms of new plugs bundled I would not be suprised to see a couple out of:

* sfz+
* Dimension (P5 version, not Pro)
* z3ta+

That might rule out the aforementioned DropZone, which looks more basic. But maybe that will be thrown in too.

They were back with SONAR Producer 3. They had individual wrappers for the non-native ones for F/X automation. They were all updated to DX in the plugin update. They have instructions on the support page for updating the .ini files to the new CLSID's manually. We used to get dual listings in other DX compatible hosts. The ones with wrappers were excluded by default in the plugin mananger. I keep meaning to write Cakewalk and ask if the VST versions have been updated beyond v3.3.0. I still have my R3c installer from Ultrafunk and install the VST versions with that then edit my .ini files.

I don't think SONAR's 4 or 5 ship with the VST versions. After my last computer build I didn't instll anything prior to 5.x. There aren't any Sonitus VST version s in my Cakewalk Shared plugins folder this time.

I agree, but as a newcomer to Live I could make the same complaint - all of their built-in stuff is strictly proprietary. At least DX stuff can also be used in Sony prog's like Sound Forge...

I have Sonar3PE, I wonder if I could just take the vst Sonitus suite from there to use in Sonar 5 and Live?

Post

If you can't find the VST dll's try looking on the CD (or DVD)... I know over different releases they've put different things on the disk that weren't installed by default... I know I've used the VST versions of Sonitus from some release of Sonar.
