indeed.

to be honest, I don't quite understand why aciddose insists on this very tight classification. If we're talking about gates, we're generally referring to the ones that allow both gating and expansion. Who gives a damn if a it's an expander by a goddamn academic trainspotter definition. It performs gate tasks also - it's as simple as that - and generally with better sound than simplistic boolean shutters.

*click*

the reason of a definition like that is to allow people to know what something is. if you discribe an expander as a gate, you might as well be calling it an orange, or a flamingo, or an orange flamingo dancing the cha cha.

the original post was complaining about how gag was not functioning as a gate. the simple reason for that is gag is not a gate, gag is an expander. if you want a gate, dont use gag! i consider the complaint void by the fact this is pointed out.

the reason i've had to repeat myself several times would be that for some reason, you people do not seem to be able to comprehend either the purpose of having a gate as opposed to an expander (and vice versa) or the whole idea of words maintaining accurate meanings.

if gag had been discribed correctly, as an expander, this complaint would never have occured at all.

Wrong way round. The problem is your inability to comprehend that GAG1 can be set up as an expander OR as a gate.

He knows the situation full well but enjoys semantics a bit too much.

The rest of us can keep calling it a gate whenever it's used as such.

So really it should be called GAE rather than GAG?

dependends on how pedantic you want to get with the description of a gate. See what aciddose said for the pedantic take.

I'm willing to live with the fact that an expander set with -80db attenuation is a gate.

Academic vs. practical, you know. whatever you feel like.

No, aciddose are just into some foolish academically discussion here. If things were like he wants them at least half of all high-end hardware gates should change name. He can call it an banana or little red car for all I care

I don't see where it says closed state is -10 dbv. That wouldn't be very closed at all. Oh I see...page 8: "Threshold (no gating to -10dBV)" No, that's referring to the switch on the back that picks between pro and consumer audio levels. Not sure what they mean, maybe the gate feature doesn't even work when its in -10 mode???

I don't have THAT button on the rear -- but I do have a -10dbu to +4dbv I/O Level slide switch. Is that it? Maybe the difference is that mine is a UK model?
Same switch. Same manuals. We're having a heated agreement. By the way, I still think you might be confusing threshold with attenuation level.

If I need a break later I'll try some stuff with the 3630 and get back to you. I haven't used it in about 10 years, so hard to remember anything about it, other than it made the drum overheads sound great. ;)

Indeed I was in my description (now that I've re-read it) -- sorry. :hihi:

It really is a stunning little piece of gear and I am constantly impressed with it's plain old fashioned functionality and smooth response. If you do any location recording, you'd feel pretty comfortable with it along side a good portable mixer -- especially using EQ on the sidechain to frequency-trigger compression levels, etc. ;)

The Alesis 3630 has a really bad rep actually. But you can replace the VCAs apparently and turn it into something good.

http://www.recording.org/e-mag/article_81.shtml (and a million other pages out there, google for "alesis 3630 mod")

Anyway, I don't remember it being totally useless, but it was tricky to find the sweet spot sometimes. But its been a long time. These days, its hard to imagine a situation where I'd want to gate or compress before printing to disk. (I am however a big fan of using Tube Pre-amps.) But I'll run it through it's paces sometime anyway just because it may make a useful sound or two that I could use in post. :)

Glad you cleared that up regarding GAG1 functionality. :) I was beginning to think I was going crazy :hihi:

Cheers,
Alex ;)

Well I can't imagine one of the "pros" mentioned in that article being frantically disappointed in a 99 quid h/w unit -- seems a bit much yeah?

I can understand "pros" fussing about bad sound coming out of a DBX 166a or a Req LA-2A, but an Alesis 3630? For the price it does an excellent job for my needs -- but I would never use it for mastering, if that's what they're referring to, and it was never made for that anyway. But then, pros will be pros and all that -- maybe there are way too many fookin "pros" about these days anyway. Maybe it's all to do with application and user preference, or how good that ugly pie tastes. :hihi:

I'm outta here. I love my GAG *AND* my 3630! This thread has been highly educational *not*. :)

Good nite!

Sometimes I think aciddose is the evil twin of gol. Both sometimes enjoys nit picking things that are totally irrelevant when it comes to the final product, the music. Heck, I don't care what a thing is called as long as it does what I intended it to do. If it doesn't? I figure out another way of doing it and using the effect for something else.

For godnessake people! Be creative, live a little, drop the nitty gritty semantics.

So, what you are saying is that GAG-1 is an EQ?
