It just beats me how you can all argue about a gate for 6 pages. Gates are some of the most boring, dull, use-any-old-shit piece of gear I've ever used. The only reason I ever liked having a few quad gates was the fact you could get lots of liitle red green and orange lights flashing in sync to your music. Quite pretty with the lights off...other than that, I could quite happily fall asleep reading the manual to any gate...if I could fall asleep that quickly anyway.

sorry kritikon. The joke falls flat on it's face. And here's a big
and to the bollocks as well on behalf of all the mixing guys here who know a gate (and especially an expander) can be used in soundshaping just the same as a compressor. The attack and release speeds allow a great playroom in shaping just about any instrument, but especially anything highly rhytmic.and with this in mind, GAG-1 is the best dynamics shaper to come out since marquis.

Agreed. Looks like mr kritikon doesn't have too much experience with some rather interesting "gates" (putting this in exclamation marks so that aciddose doesn't attack me with semantics). One of the very noticeable sounds in a rather classic piece of equipment is the gate/expander section of the SSL consoles. It is there more as a "shaper" than a boring tool.
Also, here are some of the audio examples of GAG-1 in action that I posted earlier. Now do these sound like a typical gate to you?
Original loop
Loop with GAG (in ducking mode) and MjCompressor to enhance the "vibe" that the gate created.
Another variation created with GAG+MjCompressor.
GAG doing that pumping thang!
