Why does no one include Yorkville monitors in their comparison lists? Are Yorkvilles unknown? Or are these speakers, which I think are great, not really worthy of inclusion?

Apparently in Australia Tandy sell some new tech japanese monitors for something stupid like AU$38 (~US$25). And they're meant to be really nice. This is not sarcasm, engineers went wild buying them up. Im too lazy to go all the way to Tandy so could someone else confirm this?

Tannoy Reveals, the passive version though (I don't mind speaker wire). They are very good for the price. I wrote a long review on my blog: http://www.scottyp-music.com/geardos/?p=30

Heard the BlueSky MediaDesk for the first time last night and it sounded great, showed up some serious problems in the bottom end of a mix in progress that I'd missed on my own system. I get the impression getting the sub balance right might be slightly time consuming, but when I get £400 together I might well check these out against some tr8's or something.

Probably because Yorkville mainly distributes in Canada. There's some distribution in the US but I don't think the UK. For the record I have the YSM1P's and I love them - nice tight sound for their size and great accuracy (not that I am an expert). I picked them after many listening tests though.

Another vote for the Event TR6 - just bought a pair a few weeks ago.
The nearest competitor was the KRK 5 or 6, but I found the treble way too hyped on those - a matter of taste I guess but I'm guessing most people will find them a bit fatiquing in the long run.
It was still a hard choice though cuz the KRK's have a very clear and tight bass reproduction. Very nice for electronica when you want a bass that's not just subs muddling in the corners.
Hard to describe these things with words, but the bass was simply more clear and detailed. I dunno if this is a positive sideeffect of the hyped treble?
Anyways I went with the Events because they had a clearer sound overall, and seem much more linear - even down to the 45hz specified as the lower limit. I'll never miss a sub, the treble is clear and pleasant (almost Genelec IMO). Sometimes it does feel like the higher bass frequencies are mudded up by the sub-bass freq's - but my room is full of bass traps so my guess is it has nothing to do with the monitors - in the listening room at the shop I remember the bass as much more "dry".
Man I hate trying to describe sound with words... "dry"?, "strawberry in the mids"?
Bottomline: you get a good price on the events: don't hesitate. Oh and one more thing: I found the TR-6's much better than the more expensive TR-8's.
One final thing: be careful with Prodipe monitors (french design, made in hong kong) - I managed to get a pair of those with one amp. broken - they sounded so different that there was no stereo image at all - very bad experience, your milage may vary of course, Prodipe should be great for the price.

Hope I'm not spamming, but I have a pair of these for sale in Western Massachusetts for $200 with a Hafler amplifier. I dont feel like shipping them tho.

Yeah the mediadesk are awesome. They truly are ULTRA near-field by design, tho. If you're not sitting at the desk they don't sound that good. But when you're in their sweet spot they are wonderful!

I'm looking for a desktop pair of monitors myself (around 300€ budget) and I had the chance to listen and compare two of the models listed here and the Event ALP5.

Behringer MS40
These sound like computer speakers. The digital built-in converter didnt help at all.
Forget them.

EVENT TR5
Unfortunately these are discontinued. I had the pleasure to listen the ALP5 (which where priced €366 in the store i went) and... were my favourites. Pleasant sound, great midtones, very clear.

M-AUDIO BX-8
Powerful basses, loud, but pretty gross sound. I thought they would have blow out smaller monitors, but they didnt.

M-AUDIO STUDIOPHILE DX4 & M-AUDIO BX-5a
Scheduled for audition next week, with the other m-audio monitor.
I will listen to both m-audio smaller monitors next week, but I think that I dont particularly like the sound of m-audio...

KRK RP-5 Studio Monitor
These and the RP-6 are on my top list but I have to find a shop that stocks them and that carry my current favourites, The ALP5 too.

oops! i thought this was a list of computer monitors.

i'll be getting along just fine with my extra set of mission M-71s i think. besides, as i intend to do alot of binaural work, a nice set of headphones would be important to me.

as a side note, regardless of your work monitor, think of getting a behringer DEQ2496. with it, you can tune any system to within +- 0.5dB of flat (except where a drive can't reach in the bass and treble). if you have so-so monitors in a bad room, you can do alot to improve their sound by room tuning them. the units are cheap too. i'll be getting one for my home system, but could see using it on my PC for final mixes too.
