FLS vs Orion 7...?

hi

I know very little about OP (but I do have Rich's excellent Hydra VSTi :) ).

Howver, reading the recent CM "review" of version 7 and some posts on here, it seems there are many similarities between OP and FLS e.g. pattern-based construction, song and pattern modes etc.

I use (and love very much) FLS...it's the quickest way for me to knock together a song (or at least the idea for a song, as I never seem to complete them :D ).

I also have Cubase SX2, Podium, Reason 3 and EnergyXT (all of which have their strengths) but I find that, for someone with very limited time to compose, FLS really floats my boat.

What are the differences / similarities between OP and FLS ?

Is there anything over and above FLS in OP7 that would make it worth shelling out $199 ?

FLS is an extremely stable and fun host to use but I've read about some stability issues with OP...

cheers

Try the demo :)

There's a link to it from here: http://www.synapse-audio.com/

The "best" product is very much a personal choice. Comparing hosts is fraught with danger in KVR. Ultimately its your opinion that counts for you.

I'm probably a bit biased to say that go for ORION, but really try the demo to see differences yourself. OP7 fixed a lot of the old long lasting stability issues and OP7.1 (free upgrade) will fix few problems more. OP7.1 fixes most of the issues raised by users of 7.0 and 7.1 adds bunch of new things everybody will like. So Orion is stable nowdays and we're more than happy to workout any crash problems if they do occur..

One important thing for me....does OP support Sysex recording ?

This would be a distinct advantage for me over FLS (the only other apps I know that do this are SX and Podium).

No sysex recording support yet.

I've had FL for a few years and just bought OP7 2 weeks ago. The main advantage for me so far is that I prefer the workflow. Patterns are linked to individual generators, which is less flexible, but easier to manage. The playlist feels more like a traditional linear sequencer and I find it much more logical to use. Can't comment on the sysex thing, i don't use any hardware. Try the demo, it's fully functional, just no save, and you won't need to read the manual.

If you like FL, why not stick to FL? Both FL and Orion are great and fun to work with (but my experience with Orion is pretty limited.) They seem like basically the same kind of sequencer to me. I like FL more, personally.

An alternative to either of them, for 100 bucks, is Cakewalk Sonar Home Studio, which does allow sysex and is very easy to get into.

Right - got the demo running now with "Detroit" song (default was a bit resource heavy on my venerable old P3 800 !).

Added a Triangle 2, shift clicked to midi learn filter cutoff but no response to knob twiddling....

Is there some setting I've got to change to enable this ?

chalk and cheese baby...chalk and cheese
Nobody's a nobody...

First complaint - should be able to right click on generator track in song playlist and "replace" with another generator (like in FLS and XT) rather than just delete and replace from main menu bar.

Got pretty bad audio glitches after quickly editing Triangle Fc midi data in event editor and then scrolling side to side through the data graph (with song still playing).

Probably related to my primitive machine (although cpu was only 30 - 40 %)...

Think I need to try the demo out more on my grown up DAW (P4 3.06).

PS Solved the midi control of Triangle...Orion uses it's own "link to controller" method - the eerie similarity to FLS gets more and more...
