Lads, first up let me just say that it means ALOT my posts are helpful to you. Im planning to begin teaching again soon, so it feels great to know that Iv had some success putting across what I know :)

"Just a question for you, what do you use to compose the drumbeat itself, what sort of samples and what sort of software ? I find Reason is great to use for drum beats but I always wonder if Reason's sample players are in some way destroying the sound, just paranoid"

Well, up until recently I always did it in audio form using the Cubase arrange window. This fits in great with how I work, as I can always be in total control of all the samples. For instance, any crossfading or layering is made far easier and more intuitive imo. Quite often I have loads of extra hats that I HP filter right up that I use as 'sweeteners', so it works better for me in the arrange window. Also, I like to be able to easily edit the attacks of the samples which can only really be done effectively in audio.

HOWEVER, I started using Kontakt to do some loops the other day. I set up a mix, and then I set up channels in Kontakt with just kicks, another with claps etc. And for each loop, I just change the settings slightly and alter the midi notes to play with different sounds. This way is much quicker and given that you spend some time first 'preping' the samples (ie, trimming them up just how you want), then the results dont suffer.

One thing I really like about working with the sampler is how easy it is to play with the pitch of samples in realtime while the beat plays. Sometimes its not very creative working in audio and having to manually pitch samples in cents of semitones. Having it all running like does help with the creative aspect.

Reason is a great app, and especially for beats. If you have your sounds organised in such a way (in kit form, and then with loads of REX'ed loops) Reason would be a great place to do beats. Its really quick and easy, but more than that, it seems very creatively fertile if that makes sense - its easy to be creative and experiment.

On minor problem with Reason is that its not sample accurate. But then again, its significantly more accurate than midi, so that shouldnt be an issue.

One thing to remember though is that you may want to render the loops you make in Reason to be mixed in your main host. This can actually be a great way to work - run off LOADS of individual kick only loops, percussion loops, hat loops etc. Then simply open them in the sampler or sequencer arrange window and mix n' match. That can be such a quick and easy way to make beats. Especially if you have a basic mix template already set up (ie, you reverbs and busses etc).

The samples that I use come from literally every where. Some are vinyl samples, some from drum machines and synths, some off sample CD's and some even of modern records. But I never use a sample 'as is'. Say if I get some 909 hats or something, I dont tend to think to much about where they come from as Im going to tweak them anyway, layer them, EQ them etc.

Ofcourse, for my loops that I do for redistribution I keep to my own stash. For those I do use vinyl samples, but I dont use sample CD's. I have all much synthesized sounds, all my drum machines, live recordings etc, so its plenty to use really. Kick drums are probably the only sounds that I sample off modern records, but as you can see by this toot, its not exactly like sampling them straight up. I may only use 80 (digital) samples worth of audio for a little attack! Quite often I like to use a sampled attack, but then fade into a synthesized decay (like the old sampling and synthesis idea from the old ROM synths). This works great as the sine wave kicks has loads of bottom end and no noise at all.

"I'm really confused why you still haven't released any samplecd's or something like that, you got so much knowledge and make cool sounds!"

Well, its funny you should say that but I do have a product that should be available soon. All the sounds are done, but Im waiting for the developer to get the finished software (Kompakt). This library is all movie style ambiences and drones, but nothing like you've heard before (seriously!). Virtually all of it was done with audio recordings, so its really organic sounding.

I also have thousands of trance, house and techno loops which I might at some point get out. Thats really down the devs and whether they think they can sell it I guess. There is some still competition that area, with the Vengeance libraries and that. But who knows. As and when anything comes out, I'll be sure to let you all know first (indeed, Im so excited you wont be able to shut me up!).

Cheers,

TB

Thanks again for your response tea boy. I must admit that I tend to use ReWire from Reason to Cubase which is the way I'm used to working, but I will definitely give the drum loop thing a try. It indeed would be more flexible to work with audio and I can get rid of the whole ReWire annoyance by just using VSTis and drum loops.

Much appreciated tea boy, good luck with the sample library !

Can't wait for the movie library, still like the few zip-packs of loops you released a year ago or so.

Lads, I know this is highly off topic, and I probably shouldnt be doing this...

But here is a little preview of the library. Im so excited to finally get some of my work out there. I picked a really good publisher / distributor so Im hoping to get a good exposure with this one. Fingers crossed!

ooh! some nice samples of water in 1st. Where were did you sample those? It would be cool to manipulate water samples into some weird modulated kick.

Post

Yeah, I recorded those at one of my neighbours garden ponds, lol. I then used them in cross synthesis (well, more like a cross modulation) with a granular drone, then mixed it a little of the dry rec too. That sample is part of who section on water inspired ambiences and stuff.

Oops, sorry no those were from a local fountain. I was thinking of the wrong one. I pitched them down a bit too to make them sound more substantial.

my kind of stuff tee boy, I wish you luck with your product.

Much appreciate mate. As it happens I a big fan of your work aswell! Those field recordings you make as so useful.

thanks tee boy :) I'm going to start mangling them into more immediately usable loops and sound effects. Sorry for the thread hijack.
