EDIT: With the quick response of the KVR community i was able to finish this project and submit it to a big WoW machinima contest from Europe to North America. My movie has been selected as one of the 5 finalists in my categoyr and the contest is now open to public voting to determine the positions
I'd like to say a huge thank you to one of the most helpful communities i've come across, if you like, you can sign up to this forum (very quick) and vote for my movie, i'd really appreciate it a ton
http://www.xfire.com/xf/modules.php?nam ... ic&t=91477
If you're interested to see the movie and hear the song, you can search for WoW Logic into google video, although the movie may have limited interest to you
thanks KVR

At the moment i'm trying to find a way to turn my voice into something similar to the voice used in the Daft Punk song - Technologic. I'm trying to find a good carrier at the moment, i looked at the big site list sticky but wasn't really sure which sites i could get good carriers on
Any reccomendations of what i could do to tweak my voice - im entering a contest soon with my song soon (which will include the edited voice when done) so any help would be greatly appreciated.
thanks

Well, you realize that the sample will then define what notes come out of the vocoder, right?
The voice only adds the formants and gates the sample then.
Generally most people run voice and a synth VSTi into the vocoder plug-in (or sample, if you're using a sampler) and then sequence the particular notes they want the vocoded part to play.
If you need more specific help feel free to tell what host and vocoder you're using.
And welcome to KVR

What have you tried so far? Did you follow advices of the previous thread you posted?

Usually vocoded robot voices use a carrier that's full of harmonics. A square wave or saw wave will do fine.

I haven't really tried much lately due to confusion by a variety of responses in different places, i've had people tell me to use Gsnap http://www.kvraudio.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=147644
which didn't work with my audio
and in another response to my previous thread someone said
The first vocoder i came across was this
http://www.epiphyte.ca/code/vocoder.html
which mentioned
So if anyone could tell me
-Is it really a vocoder i need to use? And would i have to apply something like a pitch shift after?
-What vocoder and synthesiser to use
-How to use a synthesiser and a point in the direction to get something like technologic
i would be glad to credit to them in my movie which will be submitted to a public vote competition
thanks,
Kotrl

this got my hopes up but really i have no idea how to create a carrier that will give me an effect specific to the song Technologic. This effect has been made popular by artists such as Kraftwerk and Laurie Anderson, and is overused by Daft Punk.
What programs would you reccomend? really i have no idea how to use a synthesiser at the moment, and am slightly pressured for time as i focus on the editing of my movie, but would like to learn more in this area in future.Generally most people run voice and a synth VSTi into the vocoder plug-in (or sample, if you're using a sampler) and then sequence the particular notes they want the vocoded part to play

I don't know that Daft Punk track, so I can't tell you how I think it was made.
If you're pressured by time AND have no experience, I suggest you get into it really fast or simply forget it. I also suggest you settle for something simular instead of an exact replica at all costs. Even with the exact same stuff as Daft Punk used, it may be quite difficult to get the very same sound again. The voice talking into the vocoder also has to be the same...
Some other popular techniques for robot-like voices:
* Use a flanger. Set resonance to full, modulation to zero. Creates a metallic sound at one tone. Can achieve effects simular to the Cylons in Battlestar Galactica, although they used vocoders.
* Pitch shifting. If you shift the pitch down, your voice becomes like Darth Vader. James Earl Jones that did his voice really had such a deep voice. They added a bit of toilet-like reverb (maybe a delay of 35ms) on this.
* Text-to-speech software that completely synthesizes a voice. Some even can sing to some extent.
I recall there was a vocoder created over a year ago that had some carriers built in. It's not included in the KVR database, but it was discussed. It had a metallic looking GUI.
I can't teach you how to use a synth in a few words. In my opinion you've bitten off more than you can chew.

just listened to the track metioned, and i can tell you with 100 percent certainty ( and i do know what i'm talking about) , that there is no vocoder involved here at all.
In fact, there's no fancy processing here at all. The voice has been pitched up, and there may well be a static flanger, as mentioned, a close chorus, or a very short delay (1-5ms) with high feedback to give that metallic sound.
at least that is the sound of the repeated vocal that is the main feature..there are other processed vocal snips in the rest of the track.
there is a bass stab that is a kind of 'yeah' being vocoded with a analogue bass patch, but you would find that very tricky to make.

Yeah i can compromise in that sense, thanks for your helpThe voice talking into the vocoder also has to be the same...

I'll try that, i use Goldwave in addition to Sony ACID for editing and i think Goldwave has a mechanise effect - not sure if thats the same as a flanger - i'll have to look up athere may well be a static flanger, as mentioned, a close chorus, or a very short delay (1-5ms) with high feedback to give that metallic sound
close chorus or a very short delay with high feedback but i'm geussing you mean something like the vocals being played twice with a small gap inbetween

what i mean is , get a delay plug-in, set the delay time to 2 ms, and turn up the feedback control!

just feed your vocoder different carriers and see what it does. in tinkering with one of the synths on my CM #18 CD and some BASIC vocoder freeware i found, i was able to get a wide variety of vocoded tones by just switching carriers.
i found square wave tones make the fattest robot type voices, but more harmonically rich carriers had very different textures. the vocoder i was using only had 3 parameters to adjust too! i used the same settings most of the time and only changed carriers. the one vocoder demo i couldn't get to work had something like 30 parameters to adjust! i wonder how much variety that unit could produce with all of the knobs enabled. i was never able to get a single decent tone out of that one.
if i only knew of a place where i could just sign up and start posting mp3s, i'd put a demo up. i did about 20 passes of arnold's "ill be back" line using different carriers and 2-3 of them sounded just like different cylons on battlestar galactica. as it stands, i got disgusted with myspace.com after 2 hours of trying to create a musician page and having to create a bunch of NEW passwords, webpages and emails along the way in what should have been just one account with one password and one email with myspace being the webpage i'm trying to create to begin with. don't think i didn't tell them where to stick that noise!
i asked for "easy to post mp3 sites" recommendations over a week ago in a new thread that no-one answered in so i still have no place to post mp3s under one account.
you could just take ANY synth, although i think oatmeal with it's random patch generator woul be ideal, and run all of it's presets through the vocoder to see what textures you like best.
don't forget to use different keys as your modulator too. you can also get a big variety in tone just by transposing your carrier wave too.
