www.refx.net there is an emulation of an c64 and sounds really nice, another way could be that Hardware Synth who is using the C64 SID Chip, but forgot the name of the synth, argh! :(

I actually have a C64 sitting in my basement, If I ever set it up I'll remember to record some drum sounds :-) Would be nice to have a set of C64 loops for LiveSlice actually... it would probably be registered users only though... with one possible exception being friendly developers of freeware plugins of course.

The SID-synth is called sidstation by the way: http://www.sidstation.com/ and the refx plugin is a very good emulation I own it myself. It would be more fun to record a real C64 though...

I don't know of any sources right now but I also have a C64 that I break out every once in a while and I've been thinking of programing some drum sounds with it. I guess if there's demand for such a thing maybe I'll get of my arse and get to it. Are there any particular types of sounds you're after? If I have a goal I might be more motivated.

Just remember that you cant just go and sample any drumsound from the C64 without clearing it with the original artist. Some dutch act tried that several years ago, sampling some very recoqnizable sounds from a Jeroen Tel C64-track without getting permission. They ended up paying ;) - if you on the other hand created the sounds yourself, you're free to sample and distribute as you see fit. That is btw. exactly what I'm in the process of doing... sampling a lot of drumsounds from my old catalog of C64-tracks. My plan was to put them out for Wusikstation, but if there's some general interest in these I might put them up as plain wav-files for you guys to mangle with.

I have a bunch of different C64's. (I mean most of them are the same, a few are somewhat modified, and a big stack of them have had the SID chips pulled.)

Not sure exactly what you mean by "drum sounds" though. Are you talking about drum sounds as they are used in particular tunes, are are you talking about samples of specific SID patches?

Yes! That would be cool!

Get SidPlay, grab some SID tunes and use the mixer to mute all but the channels with the drum sounds you want. Then you can 'Save As' in WAV format.

Metal makes a good point, but I can't see a problem with single sounds. If you sample the drums individually and make your own loops...

EDIT: Remember to knock the "Time in seconds" parameter in Settings > Wav up a bit if you want more of the tune.

Analogue or digital – which is better? There's only one way to find out... FI-I-IGHT!!!

Probably not if you only sample sounds that are "general" for the usual SID-track. The case I refer to, it wasn't as much the drumloop as it was that quite famous scratching sound Jeroen Tel created using multispeed techniques. Either way it is quite fast to cook up some drumsounds using VICE (C64 emulator) and an editor (e.g. JCH newplayer system which you can download at vibrants.dk) and sample those and dont have to think about getting into trouble ;)
