I to had been debating whether to switch to a mac strictly for logic, I finally realized that with protools m-powered, flstudio and wavearts powersuite I do not need logic. I'm sure logic is a great app, but flstudio does everything that I need and with protools this is a deadly combo. fls, ptmp cost me 500 U.S dollars. plugins that come with the two apps are great and if you need more there are tons of choices. as far as industry standard from what i noticed it depends on where one is located, in the states pro tool is king. as far as I can tell, in Europe it seems to be cubase for the most part. IMHO I think sonar is the closest PC app to compare to logic as far as goodies. If you already own Flstudio just add Pro tools with it and you will have all you need plus the ability to seemlessly transfer you sessions to most big time studios. Just remember that a mac and a pc both run software, neither will make the music for us.

I just want to say thanks to everyone on KVR for all the knowlegde and help over the last year you people are great.
Good on ya! :) Use what you think is the best for "you". Don't let anyone say otherwise. You "can" always get Logic Express (educational pricing)...I think it's priced competitively fair. But then again, you'll need a Mac to run Logic Express as well.

My friend uses ProTools and she's been "producing" for a while and she told me that it's great. I have FLS...nice little app (yes, I see it as an app rather than a host).

I have a Mac set-up...though I have Logic Pro 7. I find myself playing with Live and Reason more than Logic. :)

God, this thread stinks.

Yeah, its amazing how people seem unable to understand the position of someone and just go off sprouting completely inappropriate garbage. Like I said, I was just going to leave a funnay until I saw all the carry-on. Basically all that needed to be said was a single word - "Cubase".

Depends on where you look in the industry. Some people will tell you Pyramid is the standard. Others will tell you DP. Others, Sequoia. Or PT|HD TDM. Who do you think runs Logic and for what applications?

... except use any of the software I use on a daily basis. I would have thought that was failry obvious.

So get ORION Platinum instead. Its $199 and has way more stuff included than Logic.

(Very) broadly speaking, 'dance' music producers seem to be the heaviest Logic advocates.

Herbert is one, Michael Mayer is another, then there's the Hartnoll brothers (Edit: one of them is on Live now, not sure who) (Orbital RIP), Chemical Brothers etc, etc.

Probably because their producer friends told them it was the industry standard..

I really don't think 'dance' producers are the biggest Logic advocates. When any of those guys get to the actual mixing they all import everything in pro tools. They often do use Logic (often on laptops) to compose, on the move, on tour, at home, etc. because it's a lot of the power in a very easy to use package (if your not a complete moron) best automation of any host with tons of flexibility with the environment... but when it comes to finishing the album it's all effin pro tools

After i had to choose a new sequencer with freeze, since Logic on PC wasn't developed further, i tried them all.
Samplitude was out, because of bad MIDI.
Cubase was out, because of no sidechaining, restricted routing and no PlugIn reordering.
Live was out, since i couldn't use Waves plugs. I also didn't get used to the session thing.
Sonar was out, because of the restricted routing and that layersounds weren't possible without duplicating the MIDI-tracks.

So i went with the newcomer Tracktion.
But i never felt satsified. I always hoped for the next update. There never was the feeling, i had a tool in hands, i could work productively in aprofessional way i was used to from Logic. It always felt restricted. Too simple.

So it comes, that i started to observe the market again.
And Reaper has been getting my attraction. I really liked it, until i read a thread, about an audioperformance comparison between Reaper and Samplitude and the difference was really huge (factor 3).
So it decided, after two years, to take a closer look at Samplitude8.
And what should i say? It was love at first sight.
After many years, i finally had the same feeling again, that i had when using Logic. With this tool, you an do everything you want in an efficient, professional way (VSTi handling is much better now).
But in oposition to Logic, Samplitude has a quite consistant behaviour of the menues and mouse functionality and a great tooltip functionality, that gets you using this beast without reading only one side of a manual.
It's intuitive, workflow friendly AND complex, while Logic is only workflow friendly and complex.
And it has the little, very useful things everywhere, that are in no threads to find as feature requests, but that come from the professionals with their effective workflow, that make you love it (also Logic has that).
And it has some advantages, where Logic can't compete and is worlds apart: that objects/clips can be treated like tracks with inserting their own dedicated FXs. Vocal comping is simply a pleasure and if you've ever waived not to do a special FX you have in mind, because it would have been too much labour, in Samplitude you simply add the FX to the clip and you're done.

I don't want to praise Samplitude too long, but long speech short, as a former 10 years Logic user, you should take a very close look at Samplitude.
The thing that makes me worry about it, that i hadn't tried V8 out earlier and fiddled around at Tracktion and Reaper level. Man am i glad, to have a professional tool at my hands again!

A professional tool is any tool a professional uses to reach his goal be it called Samplitude or dance ejay. That said i am user of both logic and samplitude and i can understand what you mean by "professional" i prefer to call industrial strength :P. Samplitude is amazing but has some things it needs work on... the midi with the vstis is sometime PITA and midi wise it still feels lacking compared to logic. that said another major issue the 7 bit vst automation resolution seems to have been fixed in v9 (16 bit in v8.4 ?) hopefully to 32 bit.

In the dance industry most dance producers indeed use logic : BT,Paul van Dyk, Armin van Buuren, Gabriel & Dresden and many more use it. And when i write dance/electronica i can certainly understand why ...
