If anyone out there has access to a real, live 303 please get in touch with your system specs etc. - we're looking for some PC beta testers for Tau 2!

tau2@muon-software.com

(please, don't apply if you don't have a real 303. You won't be able to participate in the test)

Kind regards

Wahh...sounds promising.

Will there be a free upgrade from Tau Pro??

MArco :)

No - Tau2 is just the same as the plain old Tau, but we've greatly improved the 303 emulation.

Unfortunately, given the amount of hard work that has gone into it the current thinking is that, unlike Tau, Tau2 probably won't be free to the public :(

Tau Pro owners may certainly get offered a very good deal on Tau 2 for sure though.

Bahh..never mind...sounds fair enough. I love the Tau Pro, looking forward to the new one! :)

We're not really sure how much of the technology in Tau 2 should cross over in Tau Pro - I guess here is as good a place to ask as any!

If we took the code from Tau 2 into Tau Pro, quite a lot of patches would change character considerably. We're inclined at the moment, to leave Tau Pro alone especially given how popular it is - we'd offer Tau2 to them as a bonus probably so that no-one misses out.

What do people think?

hmm...not sure if I understood every last bit of it, but I motion that Tau Pro and the fabled new Tau 2 be two different instruments. As I said I like Tau Pro very much. I'm not that much of a tech head, so I'm not sure what would make the Tau2 a better 303 emulation than Tau Pro (except for more authentical wave forms) ? I understand the original silver box had some kind of erratic step sequencer?

Tau Pro and Tau2 are completely different. Leave Tau Pro out of it for the time being and go back to the original Tau - it sounded quite a lot like a 303, but not entirely. We've just gone back and made Tau sound much more like a 303. By taking lots of careful measurements from a specially modified 303 we think we've got closer to the true sound than anyone else so far.

Tau Pro however really is a completely different creature. It is desigend to be more like a two-oscillator monosynth than a 303. I'm not convinced that we should make any significant changes to the design as the results would sound quite different. What we're trying to establish is whether or not people would want us to make any changes. There's really two options:-

1) Tau Pro owners get a free Tau 2, but Tau Pro is not changed
2) Tau Pro receives the same sort of changes we made to Tau to get to Tau 2 - this will make it a more accurate 303 emulation, at the expense of some of its current character

Personally I would prefer to see the Tau Pro stay as it is. I enjoy the sound of the Tau Pro and do not use it to emulate 303 type sounds.

I use the Tau Pro as my main bass machine and as such I find more of a replacement of my ageing SH101 than a TB303. I have always found the TB303 to be a bit lighter in sound, more squeel less bass.

Post

I vote for 1) then...let's not touch Tau Pro!
Much like Pseudo, I don't really use it to emulate the 303. A "real" 303 VSTi, a ..ick...clone would be great, but the Tau Pro shouldn't be tinkered with.

Well as Tau Pro is still one of my favourite synths, I say no touchy.

I like the idea of Tau 2 to get closer to that perfect emulation that everyone's looking for. Why not? But please don't completely change the character of Tau Pro. It's just sooooo good already. :D
Happiness is the hidden behind the obvious.

Perhaps a Tau Pro 2 would be the solution if it's not too much work.

Post

Judging from the feedback, most Tau Pro owners want us to leave it just as it is. If they want a spot-on TB emulation they can always use Tau2. I don't believe a Tau Pro 2 is necessary at all.

Dave

PS - Tau 2 has moved on considerably since "that" thread. Its almost done, so watch out for some new MP3s coming soon!

Perhaps not changing, but adding the new waveforms to Tau pro is another possibility. You know, next to Saw1, Saw2, ... something like "real saw" and "real square". Just some ideas.

Post

That could be done easily enough. The engine could support as many waveforms as necessary, but it would either a) make the DLL a lot bigger or b) increase the amount of calculation the plugin needs to do (causing a slight delay) to launching depending on which implementation I choose. At the moment, the balance is about right.

Just curious though, what is not "real" about Tau Pro's saw 1 and square 1 waveforms? they're not built from TB data but from another famous synth, are you saying that you want the waveforms from Tau 2 (which are built on TB data)?

Yep, my vote goes for:

Tau Pro stays the same coz its a great synth not just for 303.

Tau2 becomes the TB-303 clone.

Mind you...it would be great to have those 'real' TB-303 wave forms inside both Tau2 and Tau Pro.
