Yo y'all:

I've just finished September's issue of Texas Music Forge and have bundled some outtakes together into an 8 Mb zip file you can download here:

Please note that I break up the URL to avoid receiving more spam than I already do.

This month's offerings are 10 old-skool funk guitar loops of 2 to 8 bars each and a rhythm track. They are all .wav files, Acidized and include riffs and rhythms in "C" "F" and "G" if you're inclined to write a song with them. They are all recorded at 120 bpm and I included the basic drum loop I used to record these samples.

These were recorded with my road-worn old Strat going straight into a 45 year old tube amp and mic'ed with a Shure 57. For a lot of this kind of American roots music, that's an ideal signal chain. The samples are played the way I learned to play funk in the bars of New Orleans, Detroit and Austin. These would make great breakdowns to insert in your dance productions or would make good structural pieces for you songwriters needing to sketch out a verse, chorus and bridge.

As always, you're allowed to use these for your own productions but packaging them as part of a compilation of samples (especially for sale) will get you tied up and dragged behind my horse.

Thanks for the kind words, y'all. To relayer above, yes, there are still some previous offerings on my server. Use the same URL as above, but remove the TexasMusicForge_12 part and substitute TexasMusicForge_#.zip on the very end and replace the # with 8, 9, 10 or 11 and you should be able to find them. I number the sample packs to go with the magazine's issue number (we're obviously coming up on our first year of publication with issue #12). Got it?

I publish on the first of every month and usually have a .zip file of various outtakes from the recording sessions that I make available to my KVR brothers and sisters here. I've downloaded a lot of free software and sounds over the years and like being able to repay the debt by making these sample packs available for free. Enjoy and let me know if you get anything useful out of using them.

On a side note, I just got hired by the Austin Shakespeare Festival to write and record some songs for a production of As You Like It to be staged here in Austin next month. They want modern music, so I anticipate having an interesting sample pack to drop on y'all sometime in September.

Just so I'm clear, this means license free for commercial as well as personal productions, correct?

These are actually offered under the Creative Commons license, which means if you use them, just credit me somewhere but otherwise there are no restrictions other than not packaging them for inclusion with other loops or samples and thank you very much for taking the trouble to ask.

It occurs to me that some of y'all might be in Austin next month and interested in checking this out. As far as I know, this production (it's not a part of the regular Festival) is a free event being staged in Zilker Park near downtown every night at 8 pm from September 21 - 26.

I'm apparently going to be seated onstage, in costume, and performing the score live with the accompaniment of the cast. They want "uptempo" and "modern" music but done with acoustic instruments only. Hmmmmmm......

Sorry for the blatant plug here, but I'd enjoy the opportunity to meet any fellow KVR folks since Victor brought it up. For anyone thinking of making a large night of it, on Friday the 22nd I go directly from doing Shakespeare to a gig with my racuous roadhouse blues band Bedrock at a biker bar near the airport. Wonder what the band will do if I just show up in costume? Tuck some bail money in your dancing shoes if you come out, it'll be a wild ride.
