Hi all,

I'm searching for a dynamic EQ in Audio Unit format for Mac OS X. Atm, all I know is the Sonalksis DQ1 (although I didn't try yet).

Any comments on this one, or any alternatives, worth to try?

Filterscape Q6 maybe? It's part of Urs Heckmann's very reasonably priced filterscape bundle. Check filterscape.com for details.

What is it that you're looking for in a 'dynamic eq'? Could a multiband compressor give you the results you're after?

Just download the demo. I think it's fully working for 14 days. IMHO it's excellent though I never bought it because I didn't feel like I needed a dynamic eq.

Thanks, Rusty! I had a brief look on their website and will give it a try next week. Do you think it works/sounds better than the Sonalksis?

What I'm after is primary a helper for those special purposes, where an EQ fails. I.e. on vocals, as an De-Esser or to smooth out some selective frequency problems. Or, another case, on velocity switched multisamples - say, the snare sounds perfect when played soft, but rings a bit when played louder.

Of course, I also want to play around with it as an effect.

But at first, it should not be a featurue overloaded allrounder, but a good sounding EQ tool (what let me hope at the DQ1, as I like the Sonalksis EQ quiet a lot)

Multiband compressors seemd for me not to be the right thing, as they often do too much dynamic shaping, or don't let you select a small enough frequency band. Also, you can only reduce gain, but not increase... or am I wrong?

Yes, I will check it out, I was just curious if there were any alternatives not to miss.
I agree, a dynamic EQ is a very special thing, normally one should care that signals are sounding good from the beginning. But tell this a singer...

There are situations where a dynamic EQ can be useful (see above), and recently someone told me that he uses them on everything, as a complete replace for normal EQs. Mainly on acoustic things, to distort them as less as possible. Who knows, I thought... might be interesting to try...

That's why FilterscapeQ6 was added to the Filterscape Bundle. It takes away the overwhelming options of Filterscape and concentrates on dynamic EQing...

krakatau - Never tried the sonalksis one, but i've got the 517 EQ and it sounds good. Does the sonalksis one use the same filters?

Urs' stuff offers tremendous bang for the buck and if you're interested in using dynamic EQ as an 'effect' as opposed to a signal processor (ok ok, some will say these are the same thing but in this context i think the meaning is clear) then the Filterscape bundle offers the most flexibility. Based on what I've seen, the FS plugins give you far more modulation options than the Sonalksis one.

Out of the 3 FS plugins I've used FS Q6 the least, I must confess, so I really can't speak as to whether it will yield the results you're after. In fact, I can only think of a handful of times where I've tried to do some dynamic EQing... But, you've inspired me to give dynamic eq a
