ntrack venting

Audio Plugin Hosts and other audio software applications discussion

I bought the "good" version of ntrack. And it is someone good, except when it crashes on me and I have to reload.
I am using an xp64 OS, and beta version 5 just sucks. The freeze crashes on me every time on anything.

In the 4 version, I have an audio track that I play, its about 5 seconds long voice. And when I freez the track (no effects), it comes out short of about 1 second. Now that is just dumb.

This is the first time in a while playing with sound and music. I am interested in the drag wave and mix features of ntrack, and haven't found much else out there that will run in winxp64 with those features. And the plug in effects are nice when they work.

Currently I am pretty discouraged, and I don't want to pay 300 for soundforge, it doesn't allow you to drag wave sectionals around so whats the point.

Also the ntrack support (sucks bad). I have written them, no response. I have tried logging into their forum, to see if that would help, NO. They register me, but I can't post.

So am at the end of my rope here ranting about this thing that I would like to run smooth, but don't. I even offered my services as a programmer, no reponse.

Anyone out there with similar issues?

Try Reaper: cheap and people are loving it.

I gave up on n-track and switched to Reaper. N-track was never stable on my system after Flavio started using the .net framework. But I have never had a problem logging on to the board, and the folks there are real helpful. You can also email Flavio and he will get back to you.

Thanks for the info. I am playing with Reaper now.
It rocks.

I am using ntrack for a wave editor mostly now, and the effects. A big problem with it has been that when I freez a track, it seems to cut off somewhere before the end of the track.

Now I need a GOOD wave editor that will handle effects.
Also that runs on xp64. Any ideas on that one?

Also, the dotnet framework isn't at fault. I use that a lot in my coding, its how he uses it, which is at fault.

The least he can do is get it working like it should be before selling it.

I used ntrack when I got my first computer years ago. I remember even then ntrack would cut off the end of a rendered track. No surprise, really, that after all this time the bug is still not fixed. I dislike that software.

Can't beat the price. Not sure about the xp64 issue though. Just says:
Wavosaur is an audio sample editor for Windows XP
Intel Core i7 8700K, 16gb, Windows 10 Pro, Focusrite Scarlet 6i6

well, the latest ntrack IS a beta isnt it? Sometimes they are prone to instability...

but i admit, the new featureset does not look very impressive at all.

i hope reaper gets a proper freeze function :)

msn messenger is my email as well.

I use an old copy of CoolEdit 2000 for destructive wav editing, but that is no longer available and probably won't work in XP64. Works in XP though.

I always thought of n-track as more of a multitrack recorder than a wav editor. If you were using n-track for this, however, Reaper should work even better. The edits are non-destructive, but you can render to a new file and then you've got what you need. Reaper loads most VST effects fine, and comes with a lot of cool effects of its own.

I haven't used midi in n-track for quite a while, but I think that n-track and Reaper are roughly equivalent in midi editing, but Reaper is getting better fast. It doesn't sound like you need that, however.

Reaper's audio editing is very powerful. You will like it I think.

Have Wavosaur-devs implemented saving feature yet? I just don't get what is purpose of editor which can't save files. :?

I always manage to crash n-track when I try it. I just tried the v5 beta for fun, and the most basic things crashed it. Within 1 minute I had crashed it twice, and nope, I'm not being sarcastic. And all I did was play with the things that were right in front of me, like the EQ and compressor.

Great feature-set, very unstable implementation, even the release versions have been ultra buggy.

Does anyone actually use this to make music ?

Such a shame :(

This is a curious thing. I have NTrack v3.3 and v4 installed on my 5yr old P3 1Ghz laptop, with the poorest sound facilities and no ASIO. The last crash I had from NTrack was over 2 years ago. I confess I haven't tried v5beta yet.

I know that I'm in a minority, but it can work with careful driver tweaking and buffer settings. Granted, many hosts are more forgiving of driver settings, but Cubase crashed constantly on the same laptop, and I could never get any settings to be stable.

It's kinda swings and roundabouts - you find the package that works for you. I mostly use Podium for my MIDI and mixin work now, with NTrack brought in for recording vocals, since I can't get the right driver/buffer settings that Podium likes.

There are a good few hosts out there these days, so if one doesn't grab you for any reason, try another..

i used n-track when i first go into computer recording. i learned a pissload from it and i'll give it credit in being very easy to get music into my computer. however, as I wanted to do more advanced things, I found it rather unstable. i've been a cubase (le, se, se3) user for over a year now and am really glad i switched.

Ntrack...brings back old memories for me. I also remember switching from ntrack to audition (when it was cool edit pro) because of a very similar problem. Havn't used ntrack in years though, I'd help if I could but I was in the same boat.

cubase doesn't run on xp64. Its funny how this OS has been out for years, and the flagship of audio products hasn't updated their software for 64bit compilation.

Much less update the directx problems so that it will run as a 32 bit app on a 64 bit system.

Post

Actually Cubase does run on xp64. All you need is the Windows x64 Syncrosoft drivers which are available on their site. I've gotten it running with no issues on x64 :D

Cubase is not yet a 64bit native app although I'm sure v4 will bring this to the table. Pro productions can easily be achieved in a 32 bit environment :)
