It's an Echo MIA and a Firewire Solo, not crappy on board cards. And I don't expect a 30% cpu boost, but wouldn't mind lower extra latency, 2.4 msec for fw solobduffy wrote:Fine, but I'd focus on the experiments after I got rid of my cheap, high-latency soundcards.mbncp wrote:>> Another trick is to buy a decent soundcard.
That's not going to solve everything.
Currently I can record new midi tracks even if I have plugs with delay enabled in sx. I never need to freeze, and I can still record live tracks.
And it would be even better with a single multi-client card, the problem is that these cards cannot work with different buffer size, all apps sharing the driver must be set to the same sample rate and buffer size.

Thanks egbert...egbert wrote:Besides this teaser on the MF site (and probably others soon if not already) the info on SX4 or Cubase 4 is embargoed - the beta testers etc are all on NDA. Steinberg forum moderators have said announcements will be made by the end of September so expect more teasers and then a full release of the gory details. I would expect this to be in the stores by Oct/Nov unless there is some holdup.BERFAB wrote:I looked through the thread and followed some of the links, but couldn't find an expected release date, price, or upgrade price from SX3. Does anyone know this information? Has it been released yet?-B

Hey, you know what I'd really like to see in Cubase 4? I'd like the audio engine to not pause and falter when I assign busses. For some reason, the pause has increased with each new version. But if it's a symptom of PDC, then never mind.

It is. Did you ever notice how some plugin insertions will simply click faintly, and others (with high latency) will pause playback for a while (the same applies to bussing).bduffy wrote:But if it's a symptom of PDC, then never mind.

Yeah, totally. I noticed it increases during playback and when the track/CPU load increases. I just recall in Nuendo/SX 1 days, you could assign tracks to Groups without and glitching in the audio. But, as we know, that was pre-PDC days. Never mind!Kingston wrote:It is. Or how about this: get rid of the Hail-Mary-my-computer-is-going-to-blow-up closing of Cubase. The only thing worse than the loading time is the closing time.

When inserting an effect Cubase will do a click and keep playing, others will simply STOP playing. I prefer the Cubase way. But if that can be fixed, or eliminated that sure would be nicebduffy wrote:But if it's a symptom of PDC, then never mind.

Well hey at least you don't have Halion and BFD racing in every project initialisation, both loading instruments that end up taking about 1.5gb of memory. This results in slow loading times (unrelated to cubase), but also sometimes random plugins around the project (usually voxengo, and god only knows why) will start to crash (totally cubases fault). I then have to quit the now frozen project, and upon restarting the same project that just crashed in initialisation, it'll work just fine!!bduffy wrote:Or how about this: get rid of the Hail-Mary-my-computer-is-going-to-blow-up closing of Cubase. Actually, I got EZ Drummer and Kontakt (BFD is next!), and EZ Drummer takes a sonuvabitch long time to load, so does Kontakt (K2 is just absurd), and Kontakt takes a murderous long time to exit; longer than any plugin I can think of. It seems that large projects just take a long time for Cubase to crash, er, I mean close.
I was reading that projects can behave differently when they're re-opened, lord knows I've seen it myself...hey, maybe there's something to look into, instead of a Quadro-Super-Duper-Chorus...

The thing I'd like to see in SX4 (or Cubase 4, or however it will called - LET'S JUST CALL IT BOB!), is the removal of "random dongle checks" while running SX... er I mean BOB!
One check on the startup is enough. If you're on the limit already in terms of mixing, and the "check" comes in causing a spike... WHAM! Your sound engine is f**ked up. Nice work, Steinberg.

More like a five in the face.
And that's not only Steinberg, a lot of dongles doing that lately. I mean... copy protection good and fine, but for christ's sage, don't slow us users down, who bought for our stuff.
Copy-protection sure is a hassle lately.

Have you done any actual tests of this? And how can you be certain it's the dongle check causing the spike? If you're on the limit already in terms of mixing, and the "check" comes in causing a spike.
I know there's a warez group that was claiming their dongle emulator used half as much cpu as the original driver. But half of what? 0.1%? And would that really matter?
I'm just curious, cause it was a hot topic a year ago but there was never any proof.
