i will admit though that it will be hard to find plugins that do sidechaining for most of your listed cathegorys, so ill give you that: logic is probably the only program that features a pitchshifter with sidechaining. whatever thats good for ;-)
I have the Fishfillets plugs and while they are good I don't necessarily think they kill the Logic plugs.
FYI: The pitchshifter does not feature a sidechain!
That begs the question: Have you ever even tried Logic?
Maybe that's the reason you don't feel like compiling a list (mine is just a sampling of the plugs I like the most. There's way more included in Logic.)
Go ahead, I am still waiting.

my guess is he hasn't got the faintest clue
might have seen Logic 5 running one day while not paying much attention
felt like typing something that's sound knowledgable but kept vague enough so not to make it obvious he really wasn't paying much attention that sunny day Logic 5 was running

Lol,
that's what I was thinking. His statement made that very clear and easy to challenge.

ok, so you think they dont "kill" the internal logic stuff - big surprise ;-)

maybe we can agree that they are "only" a lot better? :-)

as far as the "have you ever used logic"-"argument" goes: yawn. yes, i have. a lot, actually. i just reacted to your list where you made it look like you could "sidechain any way you want" with all the plugins listed. and i know theres more, theres all the stuff left that you didnt mention in your list for a reason, cause they so nicely prove my point - IMHO, if i may.
i would list steinbergs wunderverb as a high point of nuendo either (i think its not even included anymore ;-)

bottom line: it was never my intention to convince logic fans like you about anything. but in an open discussion about pros and cons, i took the freedom to note that something logic users love to list as a big pro isnt all that much of a big deal IMHO. thats an observation i made, and i take the freedom to openly say so. youre of course always welcome to completely disagree and throw things at your computer monitor if that makes you feel better :-)

oh, and no, i wont compile any further plugin lists for you, so you can stop waiting. the fact that only 5 minutes of downloading (a very gratious estimate for 3 bundles) already cover the biggest part proves my point good enough for me personally. and thats really only the very beginning - there is absolutely fantastic stuff out there, many of it outperforming even expensive commercial plugins i bought over the years. its a testament to the abilities of the "underground" developer scene - but im sure you knew all that anyway, this is the KVR forum after all.

and to the other fanboys - i produce music for a living since 15 years and have used logic for several complete major LP productions, long and often enough to know both its strenghts and its weaknesses. the last version i have used was 7.something - i did indeed not look very closely at the version number because the audio editing still is as sucky as it was in 6.x versions, which i used the most in the past (most protools based studios ive been in have been hesitant to make a complete switch to 7.x and OSX because of the many...er..."issues" and stayed with 6.x for quite a while). i have never used logic 5.x except for creating OMFs of sessions that i receive (i like to claim that im one of the few persons in my country that know how to create OMFs in logic that open properly in other hosts ;-)

sorry if my opinion about your computer program offended you. youre hereby invited to say some truly bad things about nuendo if you want :-)

that's easily one of the biggest piles of crap I have ever read...

To the original poster:

If this thread shows you anything, it's that all of the hosts have their staunch supporters, and once you decide on one, you will no doubt join the ranks of the body-snatched and come to the conclusion that your host is the absolute very best in the world, while all others are crap, and their supporters are fanboys!

Might I suggest that, before you drop any money on music software for a class/ school, you make an inquiry to the school in question on whether or not they have any recommendations. Even better -- drop by the school yourself, if convenient, and talk to some of the students; get a consensus from the folks who will be your peers (and that ain't us).

Whichever way you go, best of luck!

@jens:

very convinving and well thought out points you make. fwiw, i generally find "you probably havent used host xy" arguments equally boring.

@flugel45: youre right, the fanboy comment was probably uncalled for. read too many posts that got personal i guess. ill go back to exclusively insulting just logic now ;-)

Not at all, or we would not be having this discussion.
derek wrote: as far as the "have you ever used logic"-"argument" goes: yawn. yes, i have. a lot, actually. i just reacted to your list where you made it look like you could "sidechain any way you want" with all the plugins listed.
Ok, let's say I buy that.
derek wrote: and i know theres more, theres all the stuff left that you didnt mention in your list for a reason, cause they so nicely prove my point - IMHO, if i may.
I left more good stuff out so as to give you a break in compiling your list.. : )

You don't have to convince me. I have owned and enjoyed the program since v. 3.0. This discussion is not about platform or DAW war. It's about you making a statement that I think is incorrect/false and I challenged you to prove it.
Had you said that you prefer other plugs to Logic's own, there would have been no argument. After all we all have different taste and way of doing things.
But your statement was more explicit: There's free stuff out there that kills all Logic's plugs! That's easy enough to challenge.
And yes, the plugs in Logic have become a main attraction of the program, as well as the integration you ridiculed before. Have you even tried the channel strips, both factory and custom, in your days of major LP production?

The biggest part?? You're kiddin right?

That's perhaps the only part I can agree with. There's some talented people out there and you can download some excellent free plugs.

Derek,

I didn't even see your post, so just to let you know - I wasn't talking about you specifically. By page 3 or 4, I saw the direction the thread was taking, and stopped reading.

Hm, interesting, that Derek receives only stupidity for his arguments from a few posters. Makes me rethink my position to Logic. Maybe it's just attracting idiots? :D
Derek is right, that Logic's sound-editing capabilities are not good. hoever thinks it is good, should try a freeware sound-editor...
And he is also right, that many of the included plugins don't have the highest quality.
Childish, highly unprofessional reflexes.

and for all the 'you're all fanboys' comments.. I don't see any list of freeware plugins yet that are all 'way better' than their logic counter parts. Can we finally have a list then maybe? you know, to shut us up and all

I don't think any of us Logic users here have ever said that the plugins are superior to anything else and that they are the 'pro' in Logic Pro. Most of them are very good though, some superb, and quite easily the best and most extended list of plugins in any host.

So if someone likes to state that he can easily compile a list of freeware plugins that all completely outperform, kill even, the logic plugs but then goes on to list f**k all apart from a list of throught the nose 'you're just fanboys' remarks, I think he is full of shit.. 15 years of major LP production or not
