I have found a retailer that is offering Sonar 5 PE at £299.

1) Is this the best UK price (or at least a very good price)?

2) Will I get a free upgrade to Sonar 6 PE

3) Is an 'upgrade' the same as a new full boxed version of Sonar 6 PE or is it an 'upgrade' simply an additional disk.

4)If I upgrade to Sonar 7 PE next year, will I be upgrading from Sonar 6 or 5 ?

I have been to the Cakewalk site but these questions havn't been asked yet.

If you can answer these questions I would be very grateful

Thanks.

I looked at a few other online retailers and it was the cheapest I saw...

Once the update has been officially announced, it usually tells you that anyone who purchased after a certain date will get a free upgrade. It may be worth holding on for the official Cakewalk product page to occur, as you will likely find retailers advertising a free upgrade to the new version after this point...

It's usually the full product (disk and manual) but without the box...

Version 6. But it doesn't matter, as Cakewalk upgrades are usually the same price irrespective of what version number you are upgrading from (so upgrading from Producer 3 to Producer 6, costs the same as upgrading from Producer 5).

Thanks, that's very useful

Cheers !

Actually to clarify.Currently it costs more to upgrade to V5 from V1 and V2 than from 3 or 4. They have stated that this higher price will include V3 from release of V6. The free upgrade to V6 was only available from US retailers if you bought V5. If you purchase any form of upgrade (including Kinetic, as long as you are a cakewalk registered customer), during the month of august if you did a web purchase upgrade they would automatically ship V6 to you within one month of release.

This is the banner with the offer that was put up.

Also please note that when purchasing upgrades from Sonar you get the full version including box. The Cakewalk EULA however does not allow you to resell the software, but they do keep upgrade paths reasonably priced. Example £139 for Project 5 and Dimension Pro together if you are a current Sonar 5 user.

Hope that clears a few things up.

I hadn't realised that, I just noticed that people had said on the Cakewalk forums about jumping versions at no extra cost (usually from v3)...makes sense to charge more for people with really old versions.

You will find that UK retailers will usually sell v5 with a 'free upgrade to v6' after the official announcement from Cakewalk on v6. I purchased Sonar 2XL with a free upgrade to 3PE way back and have noticed similar offers every year since.
Also please note that when purchasing upgrades from Sonar you get the full version including box.
All three Sonar upgrades I have received have been without boxes...it probably depends where you buy them from. You may get the box if you get the upgrade direct from Cakewalk, but I always get the upgrade from elsewhere, as I object to paying £14 for delivery (although, recent Post Office changes in pricing may see a rethink on that from me).

Every upgrade I've had has been boxed (V2-V5).

Interesting. I always used to get them from the old distributor, etcetera and then CW (via Edirol) when that changed...

So can I (being UK based) purchase Sonar 5 PE -in September - from an American store and look forward to a free upgrade and $100 rebate ?

Only thing with doing that is you can attract a 17.5% VAT charge , a duty rate and an admin fee from the company for handlung HMC&E formalities for you. Should it be identified as a sale and the value known. But yes you could.
