Lets just say I see two hot sassy bitchy catholic school girls standin' on a street corner. And I for no reason whatsover *cough* *cough* want to get their attention. All I have with me is a giant timpani drum. So..I sneak up right behind them (the wheels are well oiled so no squeeky sounds) and "Pow" I drop a mean hit on the head of me drum. One to wake the dead!! And yell "Come to Daddy" (I dig Aphex Twin) "BiAtches"
Anyone know where I can find a timpani sample like that. All the ones I've come across have a weak attack. I've made somethin similar using Camel Crusher (which ROCKS) but it doesn't sound natural.
Also, I have roto toms in me studio. If I were to beat the holy hell out of those. What kind of mic and placement would I need to capture the sound without causing a ton of clipping??

They might think you're a marching band geek!
Just get a gun and some handcuffs if you're that desparate

Which timpani samples do you have? Timpani isn't exactly a percussion instrument known for it's sharp attack, but if you have a decent sample you could accentuate the attack with compression.

Oh, and for the roto toms- I tried a small diaphragm condenser but it couldn't pick up that "disco" tail, only the stick hit. I used a large diaphragm condenser (AT4050) which sounded better. I ended up using that (slightly underneath the top level of the rack mounting) in conjunction with a pair of SM57s XY above the heads. It was the only combination that worked for me but even then, they still sounded like, you know, roto toms.

Yeah, I've got an AKG mic I'll try. Plus a Shure Beta 58 too.Cordelia wrote:Oh, and for the roto toms- I tried a small diaphragm condenser but it couldn't pick up that "disco" tail, only the stick hit. I have some stuff on my Korg X3 plus Flstudio has a couple. I'm just looking for "that thunderous sound of hell" as it resonates through the drum. I'll have to find some band geek friends that'll let me do some field recordings.Cordelia wrote:Which timpani samples do you have?
