quote from the psycledelics boards :

by [JAZ] :

" Psycle Development status - June 2006

Psycle 1.9 branch seems to be working again. (During march/april it became quite broken). This means that the development continues on it, with the following already achieved things (since last dev status) :

New wave editor, custom gui controls for native/internal plugins and LFO machine all by dw.
New Resampling mode for the sampler for better quality.

The following, is halfway done:

A send-return Mixer machine
An automation machine (allows automating commands)
The new VST-host ( conforming to VST 2.4 now)
Remodelation of the wiredlg. (already improved the visuals. Next step is adding multi-io)

Also the most important thing is, probably, an almost complete reestructuration of the source code. We want to achieve several goals with this:

As you might know, there's a new branch called xpsycle, Psycle on linux. It starts to be functional. With the code reestructuration, we can share much part of the code with minimal changes for compilation.

Code modernization and cleanup. (This means using the experience we have now in order to do some things in a better way than it was initially done).

And, of course, removing old limitations in order to add new features.

As you should understand, this takes long, and it really should if we want it to be good. Hopefully, this doesn't mean that the next release should take long!

Concretely, as i said in the previous status, a version 1.8.5 is on the go, which will incorporate some of the mentioned changes (They have to be manually merged) and this shouldn't be too far away.
I don't want to talk about a date, since I hoped that in june it would be already out, and it won't. "

hope this gives you some more clues of psycle's future...

That is good to hear. I'm already very impressed and I haven't gotten through the beginner's guide yet.

But regarding dropping Psycle: Once I have posted 10 times at KVR you will see that my sig says "Try Psycle." I am not really eager to give it up, so your advice re using Ext in Psycle is appreciated. If Ext turns out to be so much better I might use it more than Psycle, who knows, but after watching the development of Psycle for so long I am reluctant to just give up. I think that the application is beginning to really get there. As soon as the new VST engine is implemented, as well as the new browser, it will perhaps be considerably improved.

So I really like Psycle, and I love free software, and I dig the whole open source thing. I think it has been an inspiration to a lot of people, and about 3-4 years ago, if you wanted a free VST host it was about the best thing going. There are a lot more options now, but during the time before KVR emerged, there was a lull in the current explosion of music software. There was Buzz, Modplug, MadTracker, Plogue, a few others, but Psycle is and was one of the best trackers. Psycle was one of the first programs to use the "wiring diagram" scheme, which I first saw in a BeOS program called Qa, I think. So I think Ext is one of the handful of programs that benefited, indirectly, by Psycle and other early ones like it.

Why don't yo download the demos of many hosts and choose your prefered one?

My vote goes to FL studio, it's heaven.

Seems pastnotecut.org has taken a dip for the summer. Understandable. That's the other thing about freeware, you take a vacation whenever you like. ;)

Good to hear. Right now I am doing just that. I am trying Ext and Mulch. If I feel like it then I will go to Tunafish next. Seems like a nice old-fashioned tracker-style thing. But Ext is pretty appealing right now. Sweet interface.

My primary hosts are Sonar 5P ($$$ - although Sonar Home Studio is $100 or less) and FLStudio ($99 for FruityLoops edition, $149 for Producer edition, last I knew.

I also have EnergyXT (which I use as a sub-host under one of the above), and I picked up SonicBytes Phrazor for $38 or so (EU29, IIRC) not long ago - and it will hold that price until the 7th of September. Phrazor is relatively new, but very competent, and it will work standalone or as a sub-host as well.

I just got word from Jaz. He says he's busy coding. I figured he was off having fun like you should in summer in Spain. Guess he has one of those job things too.

Thanks Trix. Appreciate the input. Not extremely cheap, but not so bad. Not much more than I paid for Recycle, after all. Cheers, frog

Well, I've tried a number of hosts and I ended up with Cubase SE. I found it very easy to learn, the limitations are few (considering the fact that it is an entry-level version), and the workflow is very efficient. Although you might prefer a different host if a traditional "linear" sequencer is not what you're after.
