hello people

i'm looking for anykind of source regarding this wonderfull period of music called funk, but more precisely the 80's period, wich such artists as georges clinton, grandmasterflash, many early hiphop, pfunk and even a few disco (the "roots" disco one)

those source could be samples or even better synth patches, sampler patches.

sometimes sampling the original material helps of course, but you guess i'd like some more control

in the end any well documented tech infos are also more than welcome.

thx very much in advance

cheers :D

An aside - you might also want to do some research - this month's Wax Poetics is a mini book on P-Funk

no, I think these are all samples from the original Parliament songs. I know there's also a sample-cd called 'Disco Deluxe' which is more modern but still has some usefull discosamples.
For instruments I would recommend a Moog-emulation ( i think Bernie Worrel from Parliament used this a lot), you could try the Minimogue (Free), and a clavinet-emulation, like Ticky Clav (Free)

thx Mr tunes, looks cool, i already have a few minibooks on the topic.
Barf : i have the minimonsta wich is the best emulation i've eard so far, the filter section is wicked :)

so i guess that now i need a minibook (or a maxi one) on "how to synthtise pfunk and play in 10 lessons" hehehe

i'm really into getting paarticularly this famous filtered brass chord with vibrato...if u c what i mean

i tried and achive cool result with the photone in reaktor, using unison and saw waves, but still didnt get the perfect timbre, especialy in the chord/unison

thx guys

Good suggestions!
I also have had some great success with ASynth. Tweak the filter section (ENV and RELEASE) and find a nice MS20 bass setup and you are in Funk Heaven!!
Anti-aliasing is for "synthmonk%ys".

thx ugo ;)

freeztar and barf : indeed good suggestions, i'm just in love with the mini monsta, will have a look at this clavinet thing though.

the ttrickiest thing for me, as i'm a "clicker", not a proper keyboard player, is to found all the little settings in the synth patch that make the sound alive

of course there is obvious stuff like modwheel, glide and all, but there is surely tricks coming from playin

for those who knows, check this album "multiply" by Jamie Lidell, the song : "when i come back around"...the keyboard solo in the middle of the song is sooooo goood

just a simple synth patch, but it has exactly the perfect feeling : filter and osc are perfectly tweaked

sorry just sharing some love and enthusiasm :D

Or you could just buy some Parliament/Funkadelic CDs and listen to them.

Seriously, anything you could learn from a book would sound really lame compared with listening to the actual source material and playing along with that.

hehe cool quote Drapostrophex
i have a huge collection of funk mate, and that's true books always speak about how much those guys were into drugs and kinda never talked about gear and proper musical technic
(oh and my comment contained a little bit of irony )

i spend much time re-discovering how to make those sounds, i found some cool ones, and what's cool when finding by yourself is that you can tweak sound to your own needs and style

btw i'll never have enough tech infos on this ;)
