after being forced to find a substitute for logic pc, I tried cubase, sonar and live. i couldn't get used to the workflow of cubase sx at all, wasn't able to produce a single song. of course, that's not cubase's fault. sonar was an improvement, but after a couple of months i found it to messy to deal with its synth-rack or whatever it was called. with live, i could produce a couple of songs, but the fking midi-editing rendered it useless in the end. well not useless, but not "nice to use". in short, i couldn't deal with these big players. and please don't start telling me i'm dumb or such, i used cubase on the atari st, which was great, but the pc versions don't give you that workflow. sonar and live are nice apps, too, but the two of them have serious shortcomings in my opinion (especially with regard to price and workflow).

and then: EXT!
after getting used to the main screen and the "side-mixer", it was such a pleasure to work with it :D . it does everything i need it to do, and it took me about 3 days to figure the things out which weren't so obvious. and i know there are many things to do with it apart from conventional audio/midi multitrack recording, but that's what important for me as a song-writer.so i just ordered that program yesterday (45 euros inc. taxes = a night in the disco with some drinks= great value for price). the only things which are missing in 1.3.6 or 1.4 are timestretching, a conventional mixer (vertical faders), easier midi learn of controllers (especially assigning various controllers is a bit fiddly right now)and perhaps a few other little things, which i can't remember right now (so they can't be too important). and i think most of these things will be covered by XT2.

just wanted to share my happiness  , i'm so excited about ext, and XT2 will blow us away i think :D

Hi & welcome onboard :-D

- timestretching: in XT2

- vertical mixer: use multiple outs from the sequencer and insert a mixer comp. This means, however, that you need to "render" the song in realtime using the master output. Not sure if the new mixer in XT2 is vertical or horizontal.

- easier MIDI learn? wow, I think eXT way is really easy: open synth GUI (ctrl+spacebar), File -> CC Map, add parameter and ctrl+left click on the CC field to launch MIDI learn, then just turn a knob.

Btw, I just read this thread about the XT2 features and was filled again with a warm and fuzzy feeling of total overwhelmingness and expectation

Often you can click middlemouse for an even faster solution. I seem to recall it not working in some places though, but hopefully these consistency problems will be eradicated in XT2.

The only impedance to a quick CC assign is the adding parameter stage. I'd much prefer to have another pane in the CC map window with all the parameters already listed, allowing the user to just drag and drop them over.

Post

:dog: the clever use of scroll wheel always gets me! Using it to toggle the scrollwheel behaviour in MIDI editor is a real time-saver.

Yeah, I hear you about the CC maps. I'd love to have the option to send a snapshot from my controller, and so get all the CCs I'm sending to the first column. Then I could just connect them to parameters, maybe even in a graphical way like in the main window. Just a dream.

Post

I love the idea of a MIDI learn which just adds all the CCs it receives while it's enabled.

That combined with a faster way of adding parameters, either with drag and drop or graphically as you suggested would be really excellent.

you're right there, what i was referring to was:

that's what i need! adding every parameter i want to control manually is fiddly in my opinion, but no real obstacle, of course!

Oooh! Molto excellentissante! Bravo!

I couldn't find that in your thruth-thread, however?

i haven't needed this yet, but i was wondering, how are the faders automated in a mixer comp?

Post

By sending envelopes out from the seq to the mixer and mapping the faders to CCs.

Post

thx jon!

is it possible to record realtime movements from mixer comp?

Post

Not from the GUI, I'm not sure if this is coming in XT2?

I know the subject has been talked here, but once again didn't find in the thruth-thread.

But the XT2 synth sounds freaking awesome tho :-D

...and clip-based fx

u can assign an effect to an audio clip i guess without applying it to the whole audio track.
can't wait for that too.
is beta testing on XT2 started yet?
