just getting into convolution reverb (newb). are there any free IRs out there that you recommend highly?

Depends what you're after... When in doubt, just try them all. And visit the sites mentionned here

Altiverb IR's impulse libraries are much better than any of the competition. However, the price is the paramount concern. In terms of free, they are highly subjective and also highly dependant on the responces you are using. I like to use strange .wav files in convolution reverbs, definately gives you a unique edge. However, out of all the free ones i've tried, none are so clearly cut better than one another, so you'll have to try them all out, choosing them based on the features which you value highly.
