If the rumors are true, he pocketed quite a bit of change. In exchange Digidesign probably asked him to sign a non compete and a stay the f**k off the internet contract for at least 5 years.

not really.. all I can think of is Bidule, and although I really really like it, it's not all that stable as a vst in say Logic

Well what makes you say that? First only the AU version works in Logic. Stability issues (if they are real) need to be reported to the developers so they can fix their stuff.

i guess i dont agree with the bomb factory guy here - the program choice of most logic and nuendo users i know goes way back into the early nineties. most people are a lot more "glued to their daws" than they would like to admit. myself included, of course, allthough, while i absolutely hate it when i find out that a studio can only offer logic or protools, in the long run i should be happy about that, cause it widens the horizon in a way (read: it gives you more stuff to write in wishlists to terrorize your own dawmaker

in that regard, i guess i would love to somehow stumble into a studio that only has DP for a while, but i guess theres not much chance that this is ever going to happen.

Well this was about 2001, Nuendo was just coming out from what I remember, and DP's MAS was getting people like the Bomb Factory guy coding for them and Digidesign. Altiverb came out for MAS before it came out for VST, or RTAS from what I recall.

I wasn't inferring that people would move away from Logic, Cubase, or Sonar, rather away from Pro Tools. DP had a chance to be the serous contender for the Home recording market and even compete with Pro Tools in his eyes, and I would have to agree, the audio editing was good, the stability in OS9 was there, but they are too small of an outfit, and weren't able to code for OSX quickly enough, and according to a guy I met who worked for MOTU, they have only one problem, and he owns the company... That seems to be changing now though, in the sense that they are keeping up with the other DAWs.

Motu was late to the OSX party but they more than made up for it. DP 5.1 has a great feature set. Some I would like to see in Logic too.
I read on some online catalogs the crossgrade is $400.00

Crossgrade can get as low as $350!
One gtreat thing about MOTU is that the upgrade price to the newest version of DP is always the same, it had been $149 for years, but now it's $199. Considering I haven't upgraded DP since 2.7.2....... well it's still $199! Nice, simple and cheap, like my women!

I'm upgrading soon, when we figure out how much we made on the last job we did, and split the profits.

just noticed I caled it vst instead of au.. but I stand with my statement that it's got some problems with Logic. I haven't gotten around reporting it because I've had zero time to make music lately so I didn't really care

next time I use it I'll report any kind of problems Im experiencing

Why don't they have a Mac area on this forum so Mac peeps could avoid the endless battle's and actually communicate useful information/tips without all the vitriole and hyperbole?? Has anyone suggested that before? I mean VST is not the only plug-in type, and there are a few Mac people who use Logic here... it would save me a lot of time reading, anyway...

STFU, this is a free platform forum. IMO Mac users have nothing to do with this thread since the OP asked about migrating to PC.

I agree that this thread in particular isn't about mac VS PC. In fact even Derek who made the whole mac evangelist or whatever comment has been joking about the Mysterious Digital Performer, a mac only DAW that people always say nice things about.

It gets ugly quick. That probably made DHR add that comment. The mac fanboy jabs seem to have been addressed here with no real bile, so I hope it stays that way.


Thing is, the fact of the matter is simply that if you are going to school to learn audio, and that school teaches in Logic, on a mac, the smartest thing you could do to make your life easy would be to get a mac and Logic. Same would be true if it was Sonar on a PC.
Difference is that if you were to push the mac + Logic here on KVR, it would start a flame war, if you were to push the PC + Sonar, the only flame war would be people trying to convince you to use their PC DAW instead!

BTW he didn't ask about migrating to PC, but rather what DAW would be a decent replacement for Logic , as he's going to a music college that teaches in Logic. His obvious best choice to me is to get a macbook, and dual boot XP on it. They aren't that expensive, and the power is there for audio work.

I am looking to invest on something that will see me through the next few years education wise. I am thinking of doing a computer based music course at university and it looks like the software they use is Logic, i am definately not interested in getting something unsupported so it looks like an earlier version of logic is out of the question.

I really cant be forking out for a mac at this point, the amount of software available and my current knowlage of pc hardware is what will make me stick with a PC until i have a somewhat disposable income for a machine that is used for one thing.

I have used FLStudio for a few months and i got on very well with it, i mainly want to kind of carry on what i was doing with it (making tunes via vst etc instruments) but be able to do whatever a computer music course demands. So i guess i'm also looking for some compatibility between my home software and that of the facilities at whatever university i end up at.

Hi folks,
I actually enjoy the forums the way they are. If I want Mac only info we have osxaudio.com which is a great site and I suggest every Mac owner to check out regardless of DAW of choice.
I know this site is PC centric but it's interesting to learn about new stuff that's available in PC land.
As far as this thread goes: The original poster said he had made up his mind, that's why the thread was diverted by me and others. I feel the discussion we had was very interesting and mostly vitriole/BS free.
Even if you had a Mac only forum on this site, I bet the usual posters with an agenda would still show up from time to time just like now, they can not avoid any thread that has Mac in its title.

As in this thread an altervnative to "Logic on PC" degenerates on a exhibit of sucker punches, so PC user are to blame because, it seems there is no alternative at all.
to slap 4 tracks together with some MIDI in only logic will do... how quaint? sorry but i've been here for so long, took many crap from many host, untill i found the one, but no one prevent me to express my ideas.
