I prefer Fancy Hans' opinion on that subject.

The difference between live rendering and offline rendering. AFAIK it's up to the VST developer to ensure that offline rendering is done exactly the same as live play...Spaceman Sounds wrote:I can agree with the Placebo effect, but I'm also sure that I heard a difference in tone with an export of a vsti and how it sounded playing back live.
Again this could have just been my imagination, I'll check on it later and see. Might as well do some scientific experiment

Have you ever try to record the output of your DAW to an external DAT, import it again and check the cancel trick? Try it, and in most cases you will see that there is no difference. Only broken systems show some anomalies. Professional DAWs create offline mixdowns that are identical to their realtime output.M'Snah........(aka HansM) wrote: The difference between live rendering and offline rendering. Well, some VST plugins are problematic though. Some of them are trying to emulate analog behaviour, so they won't sound 100% the same each time you play through your song. And there's even been some limited versions of some plugins (the Ces Synths, if you remember them) which weren't sample accurate in their free versions.

wow. this thread has been great fun, altough eating up alltogether too much time.
and although most of what that idiot schooled us about has to do with fairies and pixies and people like that, there really seems to be a problem with digital summing. (i mean apart from PT-systems using fixed-point arithmetics). seems to have to do with nonlinearities and dynamics in mixing-desks.
there is still no algorithm i know of to get a soft overdrive that is playable like a real tube. that stuff with dynamic convolution seemed rather promising though.
and you should never underestimate that good old resistor-noise. beats any usb-disk-digital-analog-grit-emulation stuff.

Yeah maybe you are exporting in 8 bit or 24 bit (some players will play 24bit but with a huge noise) or maybe you are not exporting at 44.1khz...
In god I trust. All the others, I virus scan
