if you notice Sonar 4 and 5 users pay the same upgrade...I'm thinking of skippng 6 and waiting for 7...;)
Same with Cubase SX1 & SX2 => SX3... I decided to wait for SX4 but may well go for Sonar or DP instead.

No such thing. VST has to be wrapped in any host in Windows, period. Either you have accsess to the wrapper or not, and they all scan initially, and with a new plug. Subdirectory listing are just a function of a particular wrapper. There is no such thing as NATIVE VST on Windows period, because VST itself isn't native to Windows. But I see the Myth keeps getting perpetuated. I suppose you could always put a blindfold on everytime you install a new plugin.

Looks like worth updating.

hehe when sonar 5 came out thats what they said -- fully integrated vst support... didnt happen. something tells me they got it right with the new version and that is nice :) might just be a worthy host now!!!

so :P and  to all of you who argued with me on that one :hihi:
In other words, you completely ignored every single thing you were ever told about how Sonar5 (and other hosts like Cubase, Acid and FL Studio) actually implemented VST handling, including an expanation quoted directly from Ron Kuper about how it was actually implemented by CW. And now, sight unseen, you've decided that they've now 'got it right'. Bleedin' typical.
Go on then, explain how this version is 'native' where the previous one wasnt. Do you still think its about whether or not the program that looked like the old wrapper is available as an external utility or not?
Want to explain to all the nice people what makes this one 'native' now? An explanation of what 'native' VST support is first would be nice.

It's also pretty unimportant, as long as it works. My pet peeve about Sonar's VST-support is that it makes a lousy job of organizing the plug-ins. It should at least obey the directory structure.

That alone makes me think the makers of Sonar are the only people who actually make music with PCs and understand how things have changed. If that is possible, wtf is wrong with everyone else?
REAPER has had this functionality for a long time :) thankfully, Justin Frankel is a dev who actually USES the software he makes, so that type of thing comes naturally for him to put in there :)
*nod* same with tracktion, and cubase.

Well, it's about goddamn time.
I realize why they didn't before but that was really hurting them.

i hope it's got some provision to skip startup scanning, and some smart logging for problem plug-ins. the best vst implementation i've ever used was in tracktion.

i really hope for good things for sonar.

i solved that a while ago. but i think my solution (subsonar) may be redundant now...

not all hosts treat VST the same way. tracktion gives you quite a bit of power over your vst directory ;)

whyterabbyt: btw, thanks for making SubSonar.

When I added the mda plugins recently, most of my used effects were way off the list and I had to scroll slowly through the list to find them.

Now they're grouped much more effectively.

Oooh, does the Studio Edition now have the per-channel integrated EQ as well?

I know it says that as part of the new console in Sonar 6, but I wondered if it's a cut & pasting mistake on the Cakewalk site.

Cant you just go by the list of stuff thats exlcusive to Producer?

http://www.cakewalk.com/Products/SONAR/Exclusives.asp

(Oh and wrt "i hope it's got some provision to skip startup scanning", S5 already did).

rabbyt, yes that is exactly what i was looking for. but my brain, just waking up in the morning didn't grasp the true meaning behind exclusives, and i actually skipped that nav item assuming it meant 'these features are exclusive to the new version of sonar as a whole' ...

typical nav text would be "Comparison Chart" -- but yes you are right it was right in front of me.

thanks.

I dont need to explain anything, apparently the devs at cakewalk seemed it nessecary enough to mention it in the latest feature list for the updgrade.

nuff said ;)

and BTW, i heard just right EVERYTHING that was said, and pointed out the annoying differences between how EVERY OTHER HOST and SONAR handled VST and VSTi's. Perhaps you should have read what i said as well  .... There is an annoying difference, that is not present in ANY other host i have tried. Hopefully sonar 6 remedies this :)

(ahh how i remember the endless discussion about semantics and the meaning of "multiple plugin menu entries" hhahahhahahha)

I mean, it seems like even Ron Kuper understood what i was talking about, and many other users who agreed with me, hence the new vst implementation in the upgrade (which hopefully will not let down).

YET ANOTHER EDIT:

whyterabbit, perhaps YOU can explain why The devs at cakewalk found it nessecary to include this *new* feature if it was already good enough? The definition of *native* is irrelevant, as we know that perhaps only a few hosts REALLY have *native* vst....

I didnt realize you made a utility for sonar... what does it do?
