I've been just using presets in the Moog for a while now, but decided it's about time I started investigating how to use more of its features. I'm getting up to speed on how to create sounds from scratch, but what I can't work out is how to use is as an effect instead of an instrument in Live.

I tried a couple of other instruments that also come with an FX vst too, and they work fine - I just drop an instrument into a track, then drop the FX vst too and it just works. However, that doesn't seem to work for the Moog. Also, it doesn't work for FM7. Not sure if there's some setup for either of these to work, and I can't find anything in the manuals to explain what I'm doing wrong (unless I missed something important). I set the external input volume and switch in the Moog, but still nothing.

What am I doing wrong? :?

Some synths which enable you to use the Filters etc as an FX require you to trigger the Envelope in order to hear any sound.
So you might need to assign a MIDI track to the Moog and draw a long note in order to trigger the Envelope.
Hope that helps
I don't have anything against gravity but it really does weigh me down

That is the case, yes. Think of the audio input as "just another oscillator" and you're there.

I was actually thinking of the external input as an oscillator as it sits in the same position as the oscillator switches and volume. I can see the peak light flashing if I hit the keyboard hard, so I know that the MIDI from the keyboard is triggering the audio out from the instrument and that the audio is reaching the Moog. The problem seems to be with the Moog itself, getting the audio from the external input to the filter.

Are you triggering the Minimoog's envelope too? Without that no sound will get through the VCA. Turn off all the blue rockers in the Mini's mixer except the external input one, set up the volume and filter envelopes, and play the external instrument while simultaneously triggering the Mini's envelopes. That ought to do it.

I'll try tonight.

Any idea about FM7? Same situation do you think?

I haven't used FM7 as an effect except long ago to see how it was done, and I don't remember very well. It's a very different critter. But I think using it as an effect is more or less the same deal.
