I use my guitar through my podxt live with modal packs and record into cubase. It just lacks the "In your face" sound that i am after, i play Technical metal stuff! I now feel that i have a punchy drum sound with bfd but the guitars are letting me down big time.
Any ideas or help would be very much appreciated!!!
What do you guys do??

There could be a couple of possibilities to check:
- try another amp simulation, e.g. Amplitube2 (I don't know the podxt but I heard from friends that it sometimes lacks that punch you mean)
- try a real amp, even better than simulations! Needs good equipment though (amps, cabinets, mics, mic preamps, room etc.)
- try to stack what you are playing by recording the same thing a few times an let it play simultaniously. Also, you can each time vary the sound and the playing technique a bit (e.g. playing an octave above or below, or giving more or less bass/highs with an eq)
- edit your stuff, e.g. cutting it hard, adjust timing etc.
- tune down your guitar
- try playing other, 'harder', licks
- ...

I use Ampeg SVT MP as a DI, it gives a huge gain, but it's adjustable, anyway i ordered a SPL Charisma 2 to use as a limiter, Hopefully it will have other uses, all that into RME FF800, sold btw, currently waiting for the TC Konnekt, which hopefully will sound a lot better, meanwhile M-Audio Ozonic does the I\0 quite well.

In combination with Guitar Suite a convolution Reverb with Cab impulses makes an unbelivable combo.
To get a powerfull sound boost around 200\300hz and compress like mad or use simply a limiter, like Waves L1 or L2, probably
there are freeware limiters, digitalfishphones has wonderfull dynamic processing plugs better than many of the best
commercial ones.

Can you record a dry sound at the same time as the wet? Using TonePort and a signal splitter, I like to record my main 'heavy' sound and also either:
a) a dry signal, to which you can add VST amp sim later, or just use as a dry signal
b) a punchy 'crunch' sound, for example an AC30 with the gain not even all the way up
Mix in some of the crunch or dry sound into your heavy sound, keeping the mids intact or even prominent in this "layered" tone. The mush that high-gain sounds sometimes create is counter-acted by the AC30 or dry signal, returning the dynamics of pick attack to your sound.

I'd also expiriment with cab models in the xt live....make sure you're using a 4x12 model...but then I think the first question before even trying that is, what do you play for a guitar?

Thanks for all the quick replys, I use a gibson Les Paul 95, I use the Line6 Big Bottom with the 4x12 treadplate. I think i'm having problems with eq more than anything!!! and im gonna try some of these impulses everyone seems to talk about.

One thing i've always wondered about that thing: does it allow low-latency recording/playing?
what's the average latency you'd get, on a standard 3500+ amd, built-in soundcard? (asio4all!)

PODxt is also now compatible with Gearbox, which offers nearly zero-latency monitoring using the POD as your soundcard instead of plugging it into another one.

yes but I can open up my buffers more and not worry about it. I'm not quite that anal about it. Well, you definitely don't need a good room, if you're mic'ing from six inches away. Get a Fender Pro Jr., an SM57, and the pres in your interface, and you can shred to your heart's content, if you want. Quiet, close-mic'ed distortion often sounds far, far better than trying to mic a deafening Marshall Stack...friteuse wrote:- try a real amp, even better than simulations!
