@RingoMop
thx for your detaild feedback.
the latest version (0.3Beta) asks you to perform the initial scan after installation. if not please try to deinstall any earlier version of effectchainer and reinstall version 0.3Beta.
you can also manage the vst folders you want to use with effectchainer and perform selective scans manually.
i think this handling of the scan process should be satisfying for the most users.

to the GUI: sure you are right and your suggestion with the two views sounds meaningful. but our intantion was to provide an clearly arranged and quite easy to use GUI which can be handled intuitively. either way you cant design a GUI that it suits to everybody. this one is matched to the acon plugin style and think it is appropriate for it's purpose.

@plastique
thx for your problem report. but i couldn't really reproduce it. it would be nice if you could give me a detailed description which plugs you've used and what exactly is not updated correctly.

thx and regards

Try if you can reproduce it with energyXT (demo version suffices):

- open EC, load eXTE.dll (effect version of energyXT)
- open eXTE gui, load a mixer (right-click in the window) and connect the mixer I/O with the master I/O
- dbl click on the mixer icon to open it
- now if you send audio through EC the mixer inside eXTE doesn't update

I cross-checked with other hosts to be sure it's not eXT itself.

Then another gui related issue (not completely sure though):

If you use EC in Phrazor (Sonicbytes.com), once you have loaded some plugins and closed the gui of EC and reopened it, you can't open the plugin guis anymore (button colour changes, but the plugin window doesn't open).
This could be Phrazor related, I can't tell this myself of course, but maybe worth to revisit.

thx plastique for your detailed report.

both problems have been located and are fixed now :)

Can I make a suggestion? Add a feature to enable plugings to be ran in a parallel signal scheme, since alot of hosts have trouble doing this.

You're very welcome :)

Any new version ready for testing ?

Mother of mercy!! This plugin is one damned fantastic little tool! I found this on accident by googling for an error message I was getting with the FFX4 DX-to-VST wrapper, found a dude with the same problem in the Renoise forum, and a link to this thread with the promise that all woes would simply vanish.

They have indeed! Haha, what a one in a million shot. I've looked everywhere for plug-ins that could wrap my VST's/DX's to DX's/VST's for a long time, and have found very very few... I mainly used Spinaudio's extremely limited free plug (but it worked), and VB Audio's semi-limited free plug (that has inexplicably stopped working), but the all-in-one Effectchainer immediately worked extremely smoothly and without error, with more or less unlimited functionality for what I need (which is admittedly just simple wrapping and basic chaining), and I just want to say thanks - this sort of a plug-in has been sorely needed for a long while, at least from my perspective.

I'll continue using the plug and report on any errors I find. No feature requests at the moment... but don't let that stop you from taking this baby as far as you can! Some of the suggestions thus far on this thread are quite good (like the parallel signal path functionality mentioned in previous posts). Though I may not use more advanced features at the moment, no telling what I might need in the future...

Anyway, much obliged for a fresh, up-to-date, functional DX/VST wrapper. I'm diggin' it, big time!

hi all,

sorry for replying so late.

Hi N.I.C. I've been working on another project for a while there but I am going to dl the latest version of your chainer and try it out. I've also installed about ten different chainers on my rig and I am comparing them all. It takes a long time to install, scan, configure and then use so many different chainers so it will be a while before I have the big picture as far as that goes - especially because I am also involved in some VST testing and reviewing at the moment. Lots going on. But I can tell you that for me the chainer that will be the one to beat is VSTHost. It is what I use for my VST plugin testing and quite honestly is going to be very hard to beat because 1) it is extremely simple in design; 2) it rarely locks up on a particular plug -at most it just won't open it; 3) it is highly configurable yet again is very simple; 4) it opens the plugs very quickly with a minimum of fuss and automatically chains them as you open them while making them very easy to bypass and 5) it is totally free and it does everything that I want a chainer to do for me. But other people may be looking for different things from their chainers so there is always a market for something else.

any word on PDC N.I.C?

also has any one found a way to load mono directX plugs in the vst wrapper?

:)

Hello.
I haven't had time to giver this chainer a try yet (a bit busy with other things, i must say, and at work at the moment so i can't try), so i would have liked to know, if this one can also load vsti and midi plugins ?
Is it a good trick for bypassing some hosts limitations that won't allow multiple instruments on a single track (like Live5) ?
Is it taken as a vst efx ? vsti ? both ?
In Live, can i use it to input/output midi messages ?

[edit]
I have been able to try it out brievly.
At first sight, it is a very nice & handy tool.
I haven't found any "move plugin up/down in the chain" : is it missing ?

And i see it is only loaded as an audio effect : you can load an instrument, but there is a display window warning ou that audio is disabled, and no midi seems to pass through it.
So this might mean 2 things :

1-If there is no midi input, does it mean that we can't assign any midi CC from a controller to a plugin that is midi-learnable ?
And, if so, as i can't seem to be able to open it in Live in "no gui" mode, i wouldn't be allowed to make any cc assignement from within the host (in order to bypass the problem quoted above)... I will try.

2-we can't use it as a midi efx chainer, or as an instrument chainer (this is one of Live's big lack : tracks are limited to one single instrument, so you can't layer them the way you'd like, and if such a chainer could do the trick, this would lead it to a biiiiig level ;) ). I know Phrazor or Ext do this perfectly, but acon chainer looks so easy to hndle...

Post

Ok, sorry for posting a little bit alone today, i could finally try the chainer, and here are some more comments than the ones i already posted above :

First : congratulations for making this, and making it available for free !

fine things :
-we can autoload the chainer in itself (load the chainer into the chainer as an effect), to chain multiple chains !

worse thing :
- once installed, how can i setup my vst folder ? Can i setup multiple vst folders ?
- confirmed : i can't midi learn any plugin, so this makes the chainer quite unfitting for live situations :(

I hope this comments can help the development of that stuff and others.

bad behaviour in Reaper (maybe because i loaded another instance of Chainer in itself ? ) :
I had this error message :

hi all, back on effectchainer for the next days!

@camsr
thx for your suggestion, but as our aim was to keep effectchainer very simple, parallel signal routes are not intended for now.

@djsubject
-pdc is implemented since version 0.3Beta:
"- the accumulated initial delay of VST plugs is now updated and transmitted to the host (right before playback starts!)"
-you can't use mono dxplugs in effectchainer for now. as they are really rare and bring a big potential of troubles, they are not supported.

@sinkmusic
-all the midi stuff is not supported.
-you can change the position of an effect by dragging it at the effect type symbol to the left (also described in the manual)
-you can edit your vst folder(s) within the options menu (right mouse button) -> "Manage VST Folders..."
-this error message is thrown by effectchainer. this folder is sometimes used to save state data of effectchainer. e.g. if you kill effectchainer while it attempts to delete such a file you get this message. this is not the end of the world, but if you want to keep this folder clean you can delete it manually.

@all
we plan to release the live 1.0 version of effectchainer at the end of the week. so we stop implementing new features for now and concentrate on optimization and bug fixing.
