I'm thinking of going for a 1212m. Are the patchmix bundled effects good?

I must say i dont use them at all. Not that they are bad etc. but i did not stick to them  I hate performance fragmentation and introduced delay so i avoid them. If you want to buy this card only because of effects then don't. I have 1820M and i get it because of multiple I/O, realy awesome sound and outstanding routing.

Pretty happy for now 8)

My overall impression is that they're better than average - useable but not outstanding. I haven't used them in more serious work, but I'm a bit fond of some of the guitar presets so I might. I do agree with kmonkey, the effecs are not a good reason to go with this card - but I'll add that they're not a reason to stay away from it either. It's been a much better card than I expected. Great sound, Zero problems and I can run it at 4mS but mostly leave it at 8mS as that is good enough for me. The patchmix was a bit of a struggle getting into, not sure I fully understand it yet...

naah, I was only buying to get some improvements in sound quality, as people said the E-Mus are good cards.

What do you mean by 'performance fragmentation' and 'introduced delay'? What exactly did you experience?

Sorry for delay. Well some of them will introduce delay and you cant use them live. Hosts with automatic PDC will compensate this durring playback.

Here is a copy paste from manual (which can be downloaded for free at emu site)

Overview
PatchMix DSP comes complete with a host of great core DSP effects including Compressors, Delays, Choruses, Flangers and Reverb. Each 32-bit effect has various parameters for editing, as well as factory presets. You can also create and save as many of your own effect presets as you wish. Since the effects are implemented in hardware, they don't place any load on your host
computer. This allows your valuable CPU cycles to be used for other applications or software plug-ins. The effects are only available at the 44.1 and 48kHz sample rates.
f Saving a session "defragments" the effect/ DSP resources. If you have used all your effects
and need another, try saving the session. There is a finite limit to how many effects you can use at the same time. As you use up the PatchMix DSP resources, certain effects will appear "grayed out" and cannot be added to the mixer. Complex effects such as reverb use more DSP resources than say a 1- Band EQ. If you continue to add effects, all of the DSP resources will eventually be used up.
