I'm planning to start sampling noise and sound around different places like city noise, construction yard noise etc. for my musical and audio productions.

I was wondering what kind of equipment are there available for this? Somekind of portable wav/mp3 recorder perhaps? It should have a possibility to use high sampling rates and it should have quality mic in it or possibility to plug an external high quality mic.

So any advice is highly appreciated :)

Personally, I would stick to the industry standard Fostex FR-2

I've been using the MAudio MicroTrack for this kind of purpose. I'm quite happy with it - there are some minor irritants, but the recording quality seems to be Ok. It comes with a Mic that isn't bad for recording ambiences and such like:
