I'm trying to insert direct wave as an effect insert on an audio track in cubase sx3 but it's not showing up in the list of available effects.
when i go to plugin information it says direct wave not loadable.
what's going on?

I can insert it as an effect into an audio channel in EXT and use it's recording features to sample my guitar, without any further messing.
In cubase it's not so easy because (as fat freddy noted) Cubase will not entertain a vsti as an effect. You could try wrapping it up in energyxt or a free chainer.

Thanks scuzzphut, that's exactly what i want to use it for. shall follow your advice and see what happens. however afaik a lot of vsti's can be used as effects in cubase and show up in the effects menu.

EnergyXT is cheap, stable, very fast and due for a major upgrade soon (for which you would qualify if you bought now)
bear in mind that wrapping is not enough - this needs to have a flexible routing environment which can be loaded as a vst fx.
on the other hand, you could pester imageLine for an fx version of Directwave. After all , there should be one if it's designed to sample.

Thanks again for the advice, will try energyXT.
But to quote the DirectWave manual:
"Input / Sampling
To record you must load DW into a mixer channel FX slot. DW only records sound from the mixer track and FX slot where it is loaded. This means any FX in slots preceding DW will be heard (and recorded) while those after it will be heard (but not recorded)".
So according to ImageLine DirectWave IS intended to be inserted in an FX channel and sample the sound in that channel? Cubase tries to load DW as an effect but reports it as unloadable. Seems to me a bit shortsighted to poduce a vst plugin that doesn't work with Cubase, who invented vst!

It should work perfectly in any modular host. And, despite Steinberg created VST specifications, it's weird they introduced the stupid differentiation between 'instrument' and 'effect' devices. I mean, it's ok to have these flagged, but restrict a 'instrument' flagged plugin with inputs to be not used as insert effect is clearly a Cubase limitation more than a DW problem.
Anyway, for next version we'll try to provide a FX flagged DirectWave dll, wich is really a lame way to solve the problem imho.
It looks next Cubase will go modular routing or something like that for what I read, let's hope they remove this instrument/effect differentiations.
