fl studio has the best pattern based step-sequencer...its really easy and intuitive great for making beats

Doggiebox, eh? Never, ever heard of that. Not only am I a PC guy, I'm not much of a step sequencer guy. However, I do enjoy a little step-entry now and again! Off the top of my head, I would think:

fxPansion's GURU

Sonic Charge Microtonic

And of course, like our friend matthewjumps suggested, FLStudio.

And you could still convert all those wave files; I can't think of a freeware batch converter off the top of my head, but you could download the 30-day trial of, say, Sound Forge and use the batch converter in there.

Audacity 1.30 beta has a batch manger - its explained on the forum i believe

For my ultimate drum kit I used kicks and toms from GSCW (maybe snares from there too) and cymbals from Kingston's ruffrider and easyrider.
NSkit7 is great too but kicks need some serious EQ boosting for rock.

Grab the free RGC's sfz player and a text editor and start compiling your kits.
Hey Zeoy - Sounds like a great idea. I'm pretty new to this stuff - how do you go about doing that? Any chance on you sharing the sfz file?

I think there are sfz files for all the kits mentioned here. I usually split them to separate sfz files including only kicks, or only snares etc. Then I use multiple instances of the sfz player to load what I need.
It's very easy to split a complete kit. You open the sfz file in a text editor and just delete everything else. For example if you need only the snares you keep only those lines refering to the snares and delete everything else. Then save as "That_kit_snares.sfz"
Nowadays I'm using mostly RMIV or jamstix but I 'll see what I have already available.

Thanks Zeoy! Hadn't thought of splitting it up and using multiple sfz instances.
